With 165 Kg of Explosives, the Implosion of the Torre Palace Hotel in Brasília Marks the End of an Abandoned Icon After Years of Legal Dispute.
The implosion of the Torre Palace hotel in Brasília ended this Sunday (01/25/2025) one of the most symbolic stories of the Northern Hotel Sector. The building, closed since 2013, was demolished using 165Kg of explosives in an operation planned to last only a few seconds, after years of abandonment, legal battles, and safety risks.

The demolition took place around 10 AM, with area isolation, preventive evacuation of neighboring hotels, and scheduled power and water shutoffs.
The goal was to eliminate a degraded structure and free the land for a new hotel development.

How It Will Be — and Why the Implosion of the Torre Palace Hotel Happens
The decision for the implosion was made after technical evaluations indicated the building’s recovery was unfeasible.
Thus, controlled demolition was considered the safest and most efficient alternative for the site. The operation was entrusted to RVS Construções, a company specialized in this type of urban intervention.
Initially scheduled for December of last year, the implosion of the Torre Palace hotel was postponed at the Army’s recommendation.
With adjustments completed, the schedule resumed this Sunday, with a series of sound alerts to inform the public and ensure safety in the surrounding area.

Sound Alerts and Operation Schedule in Brasília
Before the activation of the explosives, the organization issued two preparatory alerts at 9:57 AM and 9:58 AM. The final warning sounded at 10 AM, the moment the implosion began. In just a few seconds, the 14-story structure collapsed in a controlled manner.
“The operation follows a precise sequence. The explosives are timed, and the ones at the corners are triggered first. The rest is activated sequentially, which explains why one side may fall before the other,” explained the responsible engineer, Lorrana Oliveira.
Where the Explosives Were Installed
According to the technical team, the explosives were positioned on the ground floor, the first three floors, and also on the seventh floor.
On the lower levels, protective screens reduced debris spread. On the seventh floor, a wire structure with geotextile fabric — known as bidim — surrounded the pillars to contain debris.
This combination of techniques allowed for precise demolition, minimizing impacts on nearby buildings and the population.
Interdictions, Evacuations, and Security in the Surrounding Area
To ensure safety during the implosion of the Torre Palace hotel, three hotels located about 100 meters away were evacuated between 6 AM and 8 AM.
Additionally, the interdictions began on Saturday, with the removal of vehicles from nearby parking lots and isolation of the area for pedestrians.
The N1 and S1 roadways were completely shut down. The Fire Department, Military Police, and Detran-DF acted to control the perimeter, while Neoenergia and Caesb performed preventive shutoffs of electrical power and water supply.
Where to Watch the Implosion of the Torre Palace
Those who wanted to witness the implosion could position themselves in previously defined areas, such as the south parking lot of the Torre Fair.
According to the Secretary of Public Security, Sandro Avelar, the security perimeter had a radius of between 200 and 250 meters, with fences and guidance for the public.
“We are suggesting that people position themselves closer to the TV Tower. There, there will be a reasonable angle and a safe and controlled environment,” he stated. “At this distance, there is no possibility of debris reaching anyone,” he added.
Precautions with Dust After the Demolition
Even outside the exclusion zone, authorities warned of risks associated with dust generated by the demolition.
The Environmental Surveillance of DF informed that the material may contain biological agents, such as pigeon and bat feces.
The recommendation is to use PFF2 or N95 masks when circulating in the region and avoid outdoor activities in the first 24 to 72 hours after the implosion. Individuals belonging to at-risk groups should completely avoid exposure.
History of the Torre Palace Hotel in Brasília
Opened in 1973, the Torre Palace hotel was the first luxury hotel in the federal capital. For four decades, it hosted authorities and national and international personalities, becoming a reference in the hotel sector in Brasília.
The closure in 2013 occurred amid inheritance legal disputes between family members of the former owner.
Over the years, the abandoned building began to be occupied irregularly and associated with security issues and drug use.
What Comes Next After the Implosion
After the debris are removed and the Civil Defense inspection, the land will give way to a new development.
The project foresees a 16-story building, with up to 250 apartments and an international standard restaurant. Investors expect to complete the construction in up to three years.
Thus, the implosion of the Torre Palace hotel not only ends a chapter of abandonment, but also opens space for urban renewal in the heart of Brasília, symbolizing the transformation of a historical icon into a development opportunity.
