Demolition in Downtown Carazinho Reveals Safe Full of Old Coins, Worthless in Commerce, but That Sparked Curiosity and Attention from Collectors
A small fortune appeared during the demolition of a building in downtown Carazinho, in the North of Rio Grande do Sul. The find occurred on July 28 and quickly became a topic of conversation in the city. Inside a safe, there was a large amount of money, but all the bills were cruzeiros, cruzados, and new cruzados—currency that ceased to circulate decades ago.
The most important thing is that, despite the volume, the real value of the bills today is zero for transactions. They will be cataloged and put up for sale to interested collectors.
As they are coins from different periods, there is no exact calculation of how much they would have represented at the time.

The Lot and the Owner of the Discovery
The lot where the safe was located has belonged to the family of businessman Andrei Goelzer Bratz for decades. He admits that the scene sparked excitement. “Everyone dreams of finding treasure, and we actually found it, but this time it will be for collection purposes,” he commented.
Andrei states that he did not count the bills, but identified several 100 thousand cruzeiro notes. According to him, it was the operator of the demolition machine who noticed the safe and called him.
“The safe was already partially open due to the machine’s force and, when we saw it, it was full of money. Everyone got excited, but we quickly realized it was old money. Unfortunately, it wasn’t dollars,” he joked.
Possible Origin of the Forgotten Money
The suspicion is that the safe belonged to an old company that operated at the site and ceased operations in the early 1990s.
At the time, the firm had five markets and operated with a large volume of cash for change.
It would have left the building in 1993 during the currency transition. Since the content was already devalued, it was likely forgotten.
Repercussions and Curiosity
Moreover, the discovery attracted curious onlookers. Economics student Arthur Mazzutti Bratz, Andrei’s son, witnessed the moment.
“The repercussions went far. When they found the safe, a lot of people started showing up here, asking what the money was, if it was real. But we quickly said it was worthless. In any case, it’s a very curious story, but it will stay for the collection,” he stated.
Therefore, even without commercial value, the safe ended up providing a historical memory for the family and an event that energized the city.
