PROSUB Is A Success! Brazilian Navy Launches The Third Scorpène Submarine.
On March 27, the third of the four Scorpène submarines from the PROSUB program was launched at the naval base in Itaguaí, in the presence of the country’s president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and French President Emmanuel Macron. The Tonelero was entirely built in Brazil by Itaguaí Construções Navais (ICN) due to years of successful technology transfer and the partnership between the Brazilian Navy and Naval Group.
Only a few weeks after the delivery of the Humaitá, the Tonelero was successfully launched in Itaguaí and will soon begin sea trials for delivery in 2025. The Angostura, the last submarine in the series, will be launched in 2025.
The launch of the Scorpène submarine demonstrates the success of the PROSUB program, which is a key extension of the Franco-Brazilian strategic defense cooperation agreement signed in 2008. This program provides the Brazilian Navy not only with new capabilities and contributes to its ambitious Blue Amazon strategy but also enables Brazil to increasingly rely on a sovereign national industrial base.

Last Scorpène Submarine of PROSUB Is Expected to Be Launched in 2025 and Star A New Era for the Brazilian Navy
According to Pierre Éric Pommellet, Chairman and CEO of Naval Group, the launch of the Scorpène submarine is a significant milestone for the Brazilian Navy, ICN, Naval Group, and all its partners. This achievement is the result of their joint work to make the Prosub program and its associated technology transfer a success.
Éric states that the company is honored by the high level of trust that the Brazilian Navy has placed in its expertise and remains fully committed to supporting its demands and contributing to the development of a strong Brazilian shipbuilding industry.
ICN Teams Are Trained for Submarine Construction
The Scorpène submarines of the PROSUB program are produced and assembled at the shipyard built in Itaguaí by ICN. Naval Group contributed to the program by transferring technology, providing the submarine design file, the equipment that makes up the submarines, and technical assistance to ICN.
Teams at the ICN shipyard have also been trained in submarine construction techniques in France, as part of a vast training program for welders, trainers, pipefitters, and Brazilian electricians.
Naval Group has selected and qualified many local suppliers who have joined its supply chain for the PROSUB contract, but also for other business opportunities. This way, the company’s partners can access new markets, showcasing the know-how and experience gained through the program.
Scorpène Submarine Is Highly Stealthy and Comes Equipped With Advanced Technology
The Scorpène of the Brazilian Navy is a modern, high-performance, and stealthy submarine. Robust and durable, it is an oceanic vehicle also developed for operations in shallow waters. Multipurpose, it fulfills the entire scope of missions including Anti-Surface Warfare and Anti-Submarine Warfare, special operations, and intelligence gathering. Extremely stealthy and fast, it has a level of operational automation that allows for a limited number of crew members, reducing operational costs.
Its combat operation is highlighted by the fact that it has 6 weapon launchers, 18 weapons (torpedoes, missiles). The Scorpène submarine is equipped with the latest generation of the SUBTICS combat system, which meets the growing challenges of modern submarine missions in blue and shallow waters across the domain of submarine warfare.
Highly modular and scalable, SUBTICS can be integrated into both new platforms and as part of modernization programs for existing submarines.
