How Is Water Linked To The Black Hole?
An interesting fact is that this quasar feeds off the material around it and, in doing so, releases enormous amounts of energy. To observe this cloud, scientists obtained a spectrograph at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory in Hawaii. This instrument analyzes the light emitted by the quasar and allows researchers to understand the composition of the gases surrounding it. The temperature of the cloud is surprisingly higher than usual in space, showing how the quasar’s energy affects the environment around it.
Why Is This Discovery Important?
Finding such a large amount of water at such a distant and ancient point in the universe suggests that water molecules formed quickly, much earlier than we imagined. When we look at this cloud of water, we see the universe as it was about 1.6 billion years ago. In other words, we are looking back to a time when the universe was still young, fresh out of the Big Bang.
This finding challenged our ideas about how and when essential molecules began to form. Astronomer Eric Murphy, a co-author of the study, highlights that the presence of water at this stage of the universe shows how quickly molecular structures develop. Water likely helped cool the interstellar medium, a crucial effect for the formation of stars and galaxies like the Milky Way.
