Brazil Took Another Significant Step in the Energy Sector with the Discovery of a New Uranium Mine. The Findings Strengthen the Country’s Position as One of the Largest Powers in Reserves of the Mineral, Essential for Nuclear Energy Generation. With the Increasing Need for Energy Diversification, the New Deposit Could Further Boost the Development of the Sector in Brazil.

Nuclear energy has been gaining global relevance as a viable alternative to fossil fuels. In this scenario, uranium exploration becomes essential to ensure energy security and reduce dependence on polluting sources. The Brazilian government, through the Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB), has been investing in identifying and developing new reserves of the mineral.

Brazil and Its Strategic Role in Uranium Mining

The country has one of the largest uranium reserves in the world, placing it among the leading nations in the global energy scenario. This factor gives Brazil a strategic advantage in the sector, with potential to increase its participation in nuclear energy production.

With the need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and expand sustainable sources, uranium emerges as a key element to strengthen the Brazilian energy matrix. The discovery of the new mine reinforces this role, driving research and investment in mineral exploration.

The Discovery of the New Uranium Mine in Brazil

The Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB) plays an essential role in identifying new uranium deposits. Through the Radioactive Minerals Potential Assessment Program, the agency seeks to map promising regions for exploration and define technical criteria to enable extraction.

This program is aligned with the National Energy Plan (PNE) 2050, which encourages the resumption of mineral resource exploration. With the new discovery, Brazil takes an important step to strengthen its position in the nuclear energy sector and ensure a safer and more diversified energy matrix.

The Main Areas of Uranium Prospecting in Brazil

The uranium deposit in the Santa Quitéria region, Ceará, was discovered in 1976. Since then, the Santa Quitéria Project has been developed to explore this reserve, which is the largest in the country.
The uranium deposit in the Santa Quitéria region, Ceará, was discovered in 1976. Since then, the Santa Quitéria Project has been developed to explore this reserve, which is the largest in the country.

Since the 1970s, Brazil has been investing in identifying uranium deposits. Among the first discoveries are the reserves of Itatiaia (CE) and Lagoa Real (BA). In addition to these, new occurrences have been recorded in Serra das Gaivotas (MG), Rio Cristalino (PA), and Figueiras (PR).

Currently, the largest uranium mine in operation in Brazil is located in Caetité, Bahia. However, there is a project underway to explore a significant uranium deposit in the Santa Quitéria region, in Ceará, specifically on the Fazenda Itataia, situated between the municipalities of Santa Quitéria and Itatira. This deposit is considered the largest uranium reserve in the country, with estimates of 79,319 tons of the mineral. The project, known as the Santa Quitéria Project, is a partnership between the Nuclear Industries of Brazil (INB) and Galvani Fertilizantes. The start of operations is expected in the coming years, after obtaining the necessary environmental licenses.

The Impact of the Discovery on the Brazilian Energy Sector

The new uranium mine represents an important advancement for Brazil’s energy policy. With the growing demand for clean energy, nuclear energy gains traction as a viable alternative to reduce carbon emissions and increase energy security.

The National Energy Plan 2050 provides for the expansion of mineral exploration to strengthen the nuclear sector. The new deposit could be decisive for this advancement, enabling the construction of new power plants and increasing the installed capacity of nuclear generation in the country.

Moreover, the discovery could attract new investments in the industry of mining and generate jobs in various regions. With the resumption of research and the encouragement of prospecting, Brazil could establish itself as one of the major uranium producers on the international stage.
