Slate Auto, Backed by Jeff Bezos, Launches an Affordable and Functional Electric Pickup, Revolutionizing the Automotive Industry. Discover the Details of This Newcomer.
Slate Auto, a U.S. startup with Jeff Bezos as the main investor, has just launched its first electric pickup, called Truck.
With the goal of providing affordable and efficient transportation, the model promises to revolutionize the automotive industry, but with one condition: the starting price of US$ 20,000 is available only for the U.S. market.
Founded in 2022, Slate Auto emerges as an audacious bet by Bezos, further expanding his investment portfolio.

It seems to have come out of a science fiction movie: A Brazilian city where it rains almost every day, recording over 4,000 mm per year, driven by climatic factors — a direct result of its strategic location in the Amazon.
The brand’s proposal is clear and innovative: to create simple, electric, low-cost vehicles that prioritize accessibility over luxury.
In an interview, Chris Barman, the company’s CEO, emphasized that “the definition of what is affordable is broken” and that Slate aims to give consumers back the power of choice that, according to him, has been lost over the past decades amid the opulence of traditional automakers.

A Simplified Design and Focus on Functionality
The electric pickup Truck, unlike traditional models that prioritize luxury and technological innovations, bets on a minimalist and functional design.
With a single cab, straight lines, and a retro look, the Truck is a true reflection of Slate’s proposal: a simple and accessible vehicle.
Its dimensions are compact and ideal for those seeking agility in the city and functionality for work.
With a length of 4.43 meters, width of 1.79 meters, height of 1.76 meters, and a wheelbase of 2.76 meters, the model stands out for its maneuverability.
Inside, simplicity is key. With manual windows and manually adjustable mirrors, the model opts not to include advanced multimedia systems, being replaced by a simple smartphone holder.
However, safety has not been overlooked: the model offers six airbags, automatic emergency braking, and a rearview camera that projects the image directly onto the instrument panel.
Capacity and Versatility: From Pickup to SUV
Another major attraction of the Truck is its versatility.
The bed has a 994-liter useful capacity, while the “frunk” — front compartment with a lock — offers 198 liters additional.
This innovative design provides a load capacity of up to 635 kg and can tow up to 450 kg, a reasonable value considering its total weight of 1,635 kg.
Slate Auto also stands out for the ability to transform the pickup model into an SUV.
To achieve this, the company will sell a conversion kit that includes a cover, side windows, rear seats for up to three passengers, and even protective bars.
The best part: installation can be done by the buyer themselves.

Motor and Battery: Power and Range Just Right
The powertrain of the electric pickup consists of a rear motor with 204 hp of power and 27 kgfm of torque.
With rear-wheel drive, the Truck does not offer an all-wheel drive option.
The basic version features a 52.7 kWh battery, ensuring a range of 240 km, according to the EPA cycle (the U.S. agency responsible for testing and certifying vehicle energy consumption).
For those seeking greater range, there is an option to upgrade to an 84.3 kWh battery, extending the range to 385 km.
The batteries are supplied by SK On, a South Korean company that also supplies models from Hyundai and Kia.
The Truck accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8 seconds, reaching a top speed of 145 km/h.
The front suspension is of the McPherson type, while the rear uses a solid axle, designed to provide durability and robustness.
Direct-to-Consumer Model and Mass Production
In a move similar to Tesla, Slate Auto announced that it will sell its vehicles directly to consumers, without the need for dealerships.
Additionally, the company plans to create its own maintenance and support centers, ensuring a more personalized experience for the customer.
With sales expected to begin in the United States only in late 2026, Slate Auto has big plans for the future.
The company intends to build its factory, the location of which has not yet been announced, and reach a production of 150,000 units annually between 2027 and 2028.
Although the entry price of the pickup is attractive at US$ 20,000 (around R$ 113,000), this value is only valid for consumers benefiting from U.S. tax incentives.
Without incentives, the price can reach up to US$ 27,000 (approximately R$ 153,000), which may deter potential buyers in other regions of the world.

The Future of Slate Auto and Its Impact on the Global Market
The arrival of the Truck in the market reflects the growing movement of electric pickups and could represent an important milestone in affordable and sustainable mobility.
However, its price restriction to the U.S. raises questions about the model’s viability in other parts of the world.
While the starting price is quite competitive in the North American market, consumers from other countries may not have access to the same benefits, which could limit Slate Auto’s global expansion.
The trend of affordable electric vehicles is gaining strength, and Slate Auto could establish itself as a viable option for those seeking efficient transportation without sacrificing sustainability.
However, the success of its pickup will depend not only on the affordable price but also on the company’s ability to adapt to international markets and position itself against giants like Tesla and other traditional automakers investing more and more in electric mobility.
