With the end of DPVAT, SPVAT 2025 appears as its replacement, but the new rules and values promise to bring even higher costs for vehicle owners in Brazil.

From January 2025, Brazil will have again with compulsory transit insurance. Under the name of SPVAT (Mandatory Insurance for the Protection of Victims of Traffic Accidents)), it will replace the old DPVAT.

The objective is to provide financial support to accident victims.

Benefits include compensation for death, permanent disability, reimbursement of medical expenses and funeral services.

How will payment be made?

SPVAT will be mandatory for all motor vehicle owners. In five states — Bahia, Espirito Santo, Paraiba, Maranhao and Sergipe —, the insurance will be included in the IPVA or annual licensing fee.

This integration was made possible through partnerships with Caixa Econômica Federal. In other states and the Federal District, payment must be made directly to Caixa, using a specific guide.

Drivers who fail to pay the SPVAT will face severe consequences. Without payment, the vehicle's annual licensing will not be released.

This situation constitutes a very serious infraction, with a fine of R$293, loss of seven points on the driver's license and even seizure of the vehicle.

Value still to be defined

The cost of SPVAT for 2025 has not yet been officially announced. However, preliminary estimates suggest values between R$50 and R$60 per year. The variation will depend on the vehicle category and the region where it is registered.

Coverages and benefits

SPVAT will maintain the same coverage categories previously offered by DPVAT. These include:

  • Death compensation: up to BRL 13.500.
  • Compensation for permanent disability: up to R$13.500, depending on the severity.
  • Reimbursement of medical expenses: limit of R$2.700.

In addition, insurance can also help with professional rehabilitation expenses and funeral services, offering greater security to victims and their families.

Boris Feldman explained what happened

During his participation in TICARACATICAST, Boris Feldman clarified what happened in Brazil with the old mandatory insurance DPVAT, which was replaced by the current SPVAT.
