With the End of DPVAT, SPVAT 2025 Emerges as Its Replacement, but the New Rules and Values Promise to Bring Even Higher Costs for Vehicle Owners in Brazil.
Starting in January 2025, Brazil will have again a mandatory traffic insurance. Under the name SPVAT (Mandatory Insurance for Victim Protection in Traffic Accidents), it will replace the old DPVAT.
The aim is to provide financial support to victims of accidents.
Among the benefits are compensation for death, permanent disability, medical expense reimbursements, and funeral services.

How Will the Payment Be Made?
SPVAT will be mandatory for all motor vehicle owners. In five states — Bahia, Espírito Santo, Paraíba, Maranhão, and Sergipe — the insurance will be included in the IPVA or the annual licensing fee.
This integration has been made possible through partnerships with Caixa Econômica Federal. In other states and the Federal District, payment must be made directly at Caixa, using a specific guide.
Drivers who do not pay SPVAT will face severe consequences. Without payment, the annual vehicle licensing will not be released.
This situation constitutes a serious infraction, with a fine of R$ 293, loss of seven points on the driver’s license, and even vehicle confiscation.
Value Still Being Defined
The cost of SPVAT for 2025 has not yet been officially announced. However, preliminary estimates suggest values between R$ 50 and R$ 60 annually. The variation will depend on the vehicle’s category and the region where it is registered.
Coverages and Benefits
SPVAT will maintain the same coverage categories previously offered by DPVAT. Among them:
- Death Compensation: up to R$ 13,500.
- Permanent Disability Compensation: up to R$ 13,500, depending on the severity.
- Medical Expense Reimbursement: limit of R$ 2,700.
Additionally, the insurance may also assist with professional rehabilitation expenses and funeral services, providing greater security for victims and their families.
