Billions of barrels on the equatorial margin could lead Amapá to double its oil production in Brazil — the state aims to enter the route of companies in the Campos Basin, attract investments, and boost jobs and businesses in the oil and gas sector.
According to the police, the criminal action is orchestrated by criminal groups equipped with trucks, which can even be distribution companies and retail gas stations.
Transpetro estimates that annual losses from theft reach over R$ 150 million and are still minor compared to those occurring in countries like Mexico, where criminal gangs infiltrate the oil business.
The Pemex, Mexican oil company, estimates losses from fuel theft at over US$ 3 billion per year.
Investments in Prevention
Transpetro is investing R$ 100 million per year in a program to gather information about criminal groups, with data on the methods used by oil thieves and even tracking these individuals.
The company also reported that it has a team of 50 people studying the issue and has opened a hotline for people to report this type of crime.
Foreign investors, such as the French Engie SA, which bought TAG from Petrobras for US$ 8.6 billion in April, are also making investments to strengthen the fight against theft in its pipelines.
Engie stated in a communication that it is working together with Transpetro, as some of the company’s pipelines run alongside theirs to increase foot patrols and strengthen physical barriers, among other measures.
