Egypt plans to inaugurate one of the largest green hydrogen production facilities. In total, US$ 8 billion will be invested in the construction of the clean energy plant of the future.

The Prime Minister of Egypt, mustafa madbouly, was present at the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding to begin research on the installation of a factory that will produce green hydrogen. The unit will be installed in the Economic Zone of the Suez Canal and will receive investments of approximately 8 billion dollars for the clean energy generation.

Green hydrogen factory in Egypt will have capacity to produce 220 tons per year

The projection is that the production of the future green hydrogen unit will reach 220 thousand tons per year. The project is expected to involve Egyptian government agencies such as the Suez Canal Economic Zone General Authority and Clean and Renewable Energy Authority, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, and Egypt's sovereign wealth fund, in partnership with Renew Power, one of India's leading clean energy companies.

According to the memorandum of understanding, the company from India, in principle, will develop a Green Hydrogen plant with a capacity of 20 thousand tons per year, which can be expanded with clean energy sources. The project is scheduled to be built in stages, where the first phase will be to produce green hydrogen through a 150 MW electrolyser, equipped with 570 MW of clean energy to produce 100 thousand tons per year of green ammonia.

In the second phase, production in Egypt will be expanded and this time, the electrolyser will have a capacity of 1,5 GW, equipped with 5,68 GW of renewable energy, to generate 1 million tons of green ammonia per year. At this stage, the objective is for the green hydrogen plant to reach a capacity of 220 tons per year of clean energy.

Egyptian entities pronounce on the Green Hydrogen factory

According to Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy of Egypt, the clean energy production sites will be determined by the Clean and Renewable Energy Authority in accordance with the rules, procedures and regulations in force and the amount of energy generated will be transferred through Egypt's electrical grid.

The minister also states that the country has a great abundance of solar and wind energy production resources and is a promising market to become a global force in the clean energy value chain.

According to president of the General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone, Yahya Zaki, efforts are being made by the authority with all government agencies involved in the process of changing to a sustainable economy. Zaki cited, in particular, green hydrogen and green ammonia projects, and the Egypt Summit on Climate Change in November.

Egypt to host United Nations Climate Change Conference

Zaki also pointed to memorandums of understanding signed with alliances and international companies to establish projects in the sustainable fuel industry with a focus on export and for fueling services with clean fuels.

The engineer stated that the Suez Canal Economic Zone seeks to cooperate with the Indians in the field of green hydrogen.

In this way, the institution counts on progress with the signing of memorandums of understanding, some of which should come into force at the same time, in which Egypt will host the United Nations Conference on Climate Change this year, which will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh.
