Eletrobras’ Subsidiary Emphasizes That Contributions to Angra 3 Plant Show the Company’s Commitment to Completing the Project
Yesterday, Eletronuclear, a subsidiary of the state-owned Eletrobras, stated that investments in the construction of the Angra 3 nuclear power plant from December 2020 to 2023 are expected to total R$ 6 billion. Eletrobras’s financial director also pointed out that the contributions to the nuclear plant, which is expected to operate in 2026, demonstrate the company’s commitment to completing the project. Investments to Be Made in the Angra 3 Nuclear Plant
According to Eletronuclear’s technical director, Ricardo Pereira dos Santos, most of the investments in the Angra 3 nuclear plant will be allocated to civil construction, assembly, completion of civil and electromechanical projects, and engineering. Santos also mentioned, during a presentation at an international seminar on nuclear energy, the difficulties following the interruption of several national supply contracts in 2015, after the Angra 3 project was halted amid Operation Car Wash investigations.
The goal is to have Angra 3, a project originally dating back to the 1980s, connected to the national interconnected system by the end of 2026 as the project is being resumed. The civil construction progress of Angra 3, designed to have an installed capacity of 1,405 MW, is currently estimated to be just over 65%.

Last year, Eletrobras invested around 1 billion reais and plans to allocate an additional approximately 2.5 billion reais to Angra 3 in 2021, with 850 million reais already invested in the first half, said director Elvira. The executive’s presentation confirmed projected investments for the plant of about 18.4 billion reais.
The Privatization of Eletrobras
Considering the investment schedule, a portion of the projected investments for the Angra 3 nuclear plant will need to be made with Eletronuclear separated from Eletrobras, which is expected to be privatized by the beginning of next year. Since nuclear energy must be overseen by the State in Brazil, the privatization rules of Eletrobras will create a new state-owned entity to house Eletronuclear, in addition to the binational Itaipu.
However, the continuation of the work will require a specialized company, which will likely be foreign, forming a consortium with Brazilian companies, according to experts present at the event. The signing of contracts for civil construction and electromechanical assembly with a specialized EPC company in the nuclear sector is expected to occur in December 2021. Eletrobras anticipates that this EPC company will begin work in March 2022.
Check Out This News: Government Announces Resumption of Construction of Angra 3 Nuclear Plant and Investments May Reach R$ 15 Billion
The Government announced in May that it would resume the construction process of the Angra 3 nuclear plant, located on Itaorna beach in Angra dos Reis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. According to the announcement, it will also open the proposals from companies interested in participating in the project’s construction, with investments potentially reaching R$ 15 billion. About 18 groups have purchased the bidding document and visited the site where the two buildings of the unit will be constructed – one to house the reactor (dome) and a second for auxiliary use.
The Angra 3 nuclear plant is the largest infrastructure project planned in Brazil for 2021, with estimated installation costs around R$ 15 billion. The initial project for the nuclear plant includes the construction of two buildings, one to house the reactor and another for auxiliary use. According to government information, the first stage in the construction process of Angra 3 consists of opening the proposals from companies interested in participating in the construction of the project.
