The Angra 3 Nuclear Power Plant, from Eletrobras, still requires investments of around R$ 18.5 billion to be completed by November 2026

As part of Eletrobras’s plan to advance in the main construction line of the thermonuclear plant, the Angra 3 project is expected to receive approximately R$ 2.7 billion in 2021. The plant still requires an investment of approximately R$ 18.5 billion to be completed by November 2026. The forecast is that 1,405 megawatts (MW) of energy will be added to the national electric system.

Conclusion of the Works of the Angra 3 Plant

The former president of the company and current member of the Board of Directors, Wilson Ferreira Júnior, clarified that the work has been halted for many years and that the Angra 3 plant was decided by the company last year, when it defined a value for the critical path to reach 75% of the works. In 2020, Eletrobras spent R$ 1 billion on this project and, by 2021, the goal is to release R$ 2.7 billion.

Wilson also stated that he believes the Angra 3 plant will attract financing composed of internal and external resources. Likewise, the supervisor adds that this work will be done with the collaboration of Brazilian and international companies.

Alternatives from Eletrobras

The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) is conducting research to present alternatives for Eletrobras and its subsidiaries Eletronuclear and Itaipu. Ferreira Júnior informed that the most obvious action was the spin-off of Eletrobras.

Ferreira Júnior states that “You create a company Eletrobras B and place Eletronuclear and Itaipu under it. The shareholders are the same. It’s as if it were a mirror company, where on one side is the current Eletrobras B and on the other are Eletronuclear and Itaipu. The same shareholders own these two assets, with the participation they have today.”
