Elon Musk’s Tesla Just Discovered A New Method For Solar Energy Production. New Solar Panel Promises To Be Much Cheaper, Lighter, And Easier To Produce.
The solar energy industry is currently engaged in fierce competition to grow rapidly, and recently, billionaire Elon Musk, owner of companies like Tesla and SpaceX, introduced a new cell that could revolutionize the solar energy market. In terms of technology, the solar panel can offer immense energy value at a very low cost.
Learn How Elon Musk’s New Solar Energy Technology Works
The conventional solar panels, which consist of black and copper solar cells, have been in use since the 1950s; however, Elon Musk’s new product is a game changer. Currently, crystalline silicon dominates 90% of the global solar panel market and the market experiences an average annual growth of 30%.
Recently, Tesla made a revolutionary discovery with a material that is cheaper, lighter, and easier to produce, thereby generating a powerful solar panel solution called ferroelectric crystals, which are so thin they can power an entire house.

The cost of critical components, primarily polysilicon, for solar panel manufacturing has reached a historic high due to excessive demand and production delays. Before using silicone to produce silicon, the material must first be purified to achieve a purity of 99.99%, preventing it from crystallizing when developed into silicon rods in the center of the reactor.
Due to a recent innovation involving the arrangement of layers of thin material, Elon Musk’s Tesla sought a substitute for silicone, thus generating the ferroelectric crystals that have an energy output in solar cells that can be amplified by a factor.
Differences in Tesla’s Solar Panel Technology
Ferroelectric crystals stand out in the common solar panel because they can produce the photovoltaic effect without a PN junction, meaning that there is no need to add layers of cells that are doped positively and negatively.
According to researchers, this change could simplify the construction of solar panels. Thus, Elon Musk’s company does not need to invest in highly skilled labor or sophisticated equipment to support production. It is estimated that this new panel will cost up to 10 times less per watt compared to conventional solar panels.
With Tesla’s new technology, the expected production cost is 22 cents per watt. Until now, the cost of producing silicon panels has been a concern, which could be addressed with Tesla’s solar panel.
Elon Musk Comments on New Technology
According to Musk, Tesla’s new cell is a game changer, as it produces more energy than other technologies. To achieve this increase in solar energy generation, researchers built crystalline layers with barium, strontium, and calcium titanate, which are used to separate negative from positive charges in a single solar device by stacking them on top of each other.
Researchers found that combining different materials in thin layers can significantly increase solar energy yield. To do this, a high-power laser was used to vaporize crystals, resulting in a material that is 200 nanometers thick and has 500 layers.
Tesla’s solar panel generated a current flow a thousand times greater than that of pure barium titanium with the laser. The advancement of ferroelectric cells is a significant milestone for Tesla and the solar energy industry, as it could help Elon Musk provide electricity to the entire United States.
