This Amount to Be Invested by Petrobras in the Port of Imbetiba, in Macaé, Will Be Destined for the Modernization and Updating of Infrastructure
Yesterday, Thursday (07/29), Petrobras announced that it will invest R$ 24 million in the Port of Imbetiba, in the city of Macaé, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Brazil’s largest oil company also states that this amount to be invested in the port will be allocated for the modernization and renovation of infrastructure. Petrobras has also contracted and mobilized large equipment to support these projects. Segments and Projects to Which Petrobras Investments in Macaé Will Be Allocated
This injection of funds aims to enhance the logistical support at the Port of Imbetiba to support the routine and anchoring projects of Petrobras platforms. These investments generate returns for society through job creation, encouragement of activities of other companies, and consequent tax collection. One of Petrobras’ own port facilities, the Port of Imbetiba, in the city of Macaé, has three piers and six berths, currently handling around 115 dockings per month. In the post-pandemic era, this number is expected to reach 150 dockings/month.
In order to cater to underwater projects, the port will utilize three large cranes – one with a capacity to move 120 tons within a 25-meter radius and two that can move 30 tons within a 35-meter radius. According to José Alves, Port Operations Manager in Macaé, he emphasizes the importance of the activity for Petrobras.

José highlights that anchoring, a segment of the underwater area, is responsible for the installation and maintenance of production units (e.g., UEP – Stationary Production Unit, FPSO – an acronym in English for floating production, storage, and offloading unit), as well as anchoring drilling rigs using and moving materials and equipment of large dimensions and high weight.
Another investment by Petrobras is the expansion of the retro area from 16,000 to 24,000 m², representing a 50% increase. Comparatively, with the future extension, there would be room for 235 public transport buses to be parked. This additional space to the storage area can be used, for example, for customs clearance and for the construction and assembly of large materials that cannot be transported by road.
Improvement in the Number of Dockings at the Port of Imbetiba, in Macaé
Another expectation from Petrobras is the increase in volume to up to 150 dockings per month at the Port. The idea is largely linked to the expansion of the docking window, a model in effect since April of this year. It has become possible for AHTS 21000 — high-power vessels that act as tugboats, anchor handling, and supply transport — to dock and undock without the need to wait for high tide.
With this change, the benefit is the reduction in the waiting time for ships, as under certain environmental conditions, vessels sometimes remain idle for up to 12 hours, waiting for new docking opportunities. Even if a ship is halted, the freighting rate must be maintained. Additionally, it can cause delays in the installation and maintenance of mooring cables. In summary, these factors can affect some productive activities.
