Partnership Between Embraer And Pentagon-Affiliated Company Invests In Artificial Intelligence To Transform The A‑29 Super Tucano Into A Specialized Platform For Combatting Drones, Expanding Low-Cost Air Defense Missions And Strengthening The Role Of The Brazilian Aircraft In Modern Scenarios Of Technological Warfare.
Embraer announced a partnership with the American Valkyrie Aero to enhance the A-29 Super Tucano‘s capacity in anti-drone missions.
The agreement provides for the integration of the Gunslinger system, an Artificial Intelligence-based solution aimed at combating unmanned aerial systems, in a new phase of the Brazilian manufacturer’s strategy to adapt the aircraft to threats that have emerged in recent conflicts.
According to Embraer, the technological package will be incorporated into the sensors and armament of the light attack turboprop, enabling real-time tactical decisions to locate, track, and neutralize unmanned targets.

Scientists drilled nearly 8,000 meters into the ocean floor above the fault that caused the 2011 tsunami in Japan and discovered that a layer of clay 130 million years old was responsible for making the wave much worse than any model had predicted.
The company claims that the A-29 already operates with integrated and proven onboard sensors in combat, and that the new partnership aims to elevate this level with a more mission-oriented architecture for C-UAS operations, the acronym used for counter-drone operations.
The initiative was announced on March 4, 2026, in Jacksonville, Florida, where Embraer maintains the subsidiary responsible for assembling the Super Tucano for U.S. customers and also for purchases made through the U.S. government’s Foreign Military Sales program.
The announcement incorporates the Brazilian aircraft into a segment that has attracted growing investment from the defense industry: that of manned platforms with lower operational costs than conventional fighters for intercepting low-cost aerial threats.

Gunslinger System And The New Anti-Drone Mission Of The Super Tucano
According to the statement, the Gunslinger was developed to respond to a rapidly changing threat environment, marked by the proliferation of reconnaissance drones, loitering munitions, and unidirectional attack systems.
Valkyrie’s proposal is to combine AI-driven processing with detection, tracking, and engagement capabilities, reducing the time between target identification and the aircraft’s reaction in the theater of operations.
In practice, Embraer is trying to position the A-29 as a lower-cost alternative to a problem that, in many cases, is still being faced with more expensive platforms.
The statement itself maintains that armed forces have been employing top-tier fighters to shoot down drones, which raises the cost per mission.
In this context, the Super Tucano equipped with the Gunslinger is presented as a more financially efficient option for persistent surveillance and response missions.
Another point highlighted by the companies is the flight profile of the A-29.
As a light attack turboprop and advanced training aircraft, the Super Tucano combines high endurance, good maneuverability, and speed compatible with various attack drones.
This characteristic tends to favor more stable engagements than those carried out by high-performance jets.
Embraer states that this feature opens up opportunities for more precise use of guided rockets, machine guns, and other armaments in short-range air defense scenarios.
Embraer Strategy In The International Defense Market
The partnership also reinforces Embraer’s attempt to broaden the range of applications of the Super Tucano in an increasingly flexible mission-oriented international market.
The A-29 is already sold as a multi-mission platform for training, surveillance, close air support, and light attack.
Now, combatting drones is gaining prominence as a commercial and operational argument for the aircraft.

This change occurs in a scenario where armed forces seek cheaper means to face asymmetric threats and saturation attacks with unmanned vehicles.
This movement comes at a time of recent expansion of the program.
In December 2024, Embraer announced the sale of 12 A-29N aircraft to Portugal, which became the first operator of the variant with communications compatible with NATO standards.
Shortly after, at the end of the same month, the manufacturer reported the sale of four units to a new customer in Africa.
The contracts reinforced the international presence of the Super Tucano family and helped maintain the aircraft’s visibility in the company’s military portfolio.
In announcing the new agreement, Embraer emphasized the operational history of the platform.
“We are proud to announce this partnership with Valkyrie Aero to further enhance the capabilities of the A-29 C-UAS.
With over 60,000 combat flight hours, the A-29 Super Tucano is the best platform in the world for light attacks and ideal for crewed operations against the C-UAS”, stated Marcio Monteiro, Vice President of Market Intelligence at Embraer Defense & Security.
Valkyrie Aero And Contracts With The US Department Of Defense
Valkyrie Aero has been described by Embraer as the prime contractor for the United States Department of Defense and a tactical technology company focused on air-to-air and ground-to-air defense solutions.
In the material released by the Brazilian manufacturer, the company claims to maintain strategic contracts with the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, NATO, and partner countries.
In addition, it is involved in training programs for pilots and in contracted close air support operations.
There are previous public records of Valkyrie’s participation in training for advanced air traffic controllers and contracted close air support missions with Tucano family aircraft.
In 2019 and 2020, communications related to ATAC, a Textron group company, mentioned Valkyrie as part of teams focused on training JTACs.
In these activities, A-27 Tucano aircraft were used in missions supporting the operational preparation of American forces.
Justifying the partnership with Embraer, Chris Turner, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy at Valkyrie Aero, stated that the system was born from demands directly observed in the training routines with military operators.
“Valkyrie Aero is excited about this partnership with Embraer to bring the Gunslinger to the A-29 platform for customers worldwide.
The Gunslinger arises from the immediate needs of frontline fighters”, declared the executive.
Growth Of Drone Threats Changes Military Scenario
More than just adding new equipment, the agreement signals a shift in emphasis in how the Super Tucano has been promoted internationally.
The aircraft, already established as a light attack and training platform, is now being presented more clearly as a vector for anti-drone defense in crewed missions.
This proposal combines flight durability, lower operational costs, and the capability to adapt to sensors and armaments.
This movement follows a broader industry trend seeking scalable responses to a scenario where low-cost drones can impose significant wear on much more expensive military systems.
In this environment, Embraer and Valkyrie’s proposal is to transform an already mature and widely employed platform into a specialized option for intercepting, patrolling, and neutralizing unmanned threats.
