The New Businesses That Will Depart at the Pernambuco Terminal Until 2027 Total More Than 46 Billion in Investments

The Port of Suape, located in the metropolitan region of Recife (PE), was once a reference in job generation before the Brazilian naval sector sank with the scandals revealed by Operation Lava Jato. But the comeback of this largest and most important maritime terminal in the Northeast has already begun, bringing great optimism for the local and national economy with the prospect of thousands of new jobs, resulting from huge investments that are to come.

Currently, 224 companies are installed in the Suape industrial complex, which has generated, according to a survey conducted by Movimento Econômico, at least 40,000 direct and indirect jobs. These businesses will be added to at least 12 other strategic billion-dollar projects, which together exceed R$ 46 billion, and are projected to create another 25,000 new jobs. It is possible that by 2027 there will be around 60,000 workers.

The Port of Suape will complete 45 years in 2023. In 2022, the complex had much to celebrate, as it closed the year with R$ 354 million in global revenue, an increase of 35% compared to the previous year (2021), regarding container handling. Cargo handling also closed the year with a 13% increase, totaling 24.9 million tons.

Current and Future Projects That Will Generate Thousands of Jobs in Suape

The green hydrogen production plant of Qair is the future project that leads the investment prospects at the Port of Suape. There will be two desalination plants to utilize seawater with 1 GW of electrolysis capacity. Construction is expected to start in 2025. About R$ 22.5 billion will be invested, generating nearly 3,000 jobs and boosting Brazil to stand out in the production of this “green gold”.

There is also a huge expectation for the arrival of Maersk, the largest maritime logistics company in the world. The company, through A.P. Moller, acquired an important area of the Atlântico Sul shipyard and is expected to start the works for the installation of a container terminal by the end of 2023, competing with Tecon, which has operated there since 2001. There will be R$ 2.5 billion in investments and about 1,600 jobs.

The Abreu e Lima refinery, which has been operating in the Suape port complex since 2014, is expected to gain new life with more than R$ 5 billion in investments, aiming for a future sale by Petrobras. This is the project that will generate the most jobs at the site until 2027. The estimate is for 12,000 job positions. Check in detail the projections of each project:

The Return of Autonomy: One of the Greatest Achievements of Suape

The autonomy of Suape was restored in October 2022, marking one of the greatest achievements of the complex and the Government of Pernambuco. Thus, the port itself will be able to manage its businesses, providing even more speed to new enterprises.
