The Rafale fighters were announced as the winners of the contest in 2010, however the Government's decision was annulled, with the Swedish fighter being chosen by the FAB for technical reasons, three years later.

In addition to the possible purchase of Rafale fighter jets, President Lula announced alongside the French president, Emmanuel Macron, a partnership between the countries that provides for the exchange of technology for the construction of a Brazilian nuclear submarine. Lula spoke to the French president: “tell the French that Brazil seeks knowledge of nuclear technology, not to have war, but to guarantee countries that want peace, that Brazil will be on their side.”

The Brazilian president highlighted that a “problem of animosity against the democratic process” affects both Brazil and the rest of the world, and highlighted that the partnership with France will allow two important countries to prepare so that they can live with this animosity without worry about any type of war, since Brazil is a defender of peace.

Brazilian nuclear submarine could be ready in 2031

Lula and Macron made statements during the inaugural ceremony of the Brazilian Navy's Tonelero (S42) submarine, which is part of a unique strategic partnership between the governments of France and Brazil, which will result in the construction of the first Brazilian nuclear submarine.

O submarine It should be ready in 2031 and will be the largest of all, measuring 100 meters long and weighing 7 thousand tons. Macron states his desire to start a chapter for new submarines, so that it is possible to look forward to nuclear propulsion while being perfectly respectful of all non-proliferation commitments.

The French leader defended expanding the partnership between Brazil and France. According to him, the two countries share the same worldview and reject conflict.

Macron highlights that he is convinced that it is possible to open a new strategic partnership between the two countries, which have the same vision of the world and its balance. He rejects the world that is a prisoner of conflict between two great powers.
