São Luís and Macaé Will Be Stages for New Natural Gas Projects by Eneva, Which Has Been Assessing the Feasibility of Implementing Gas Throughout the Country
Eneva is planning to build two natural gas hubs in Brazil, one in São Luís/MA, probably at the Porto do Itaqui, and another in Macaé/RJ, which already has a defined location: the Macaé Port Terminal (Tepor). According to Marcelo Lopes, the company’s Director of New Business and Commercialization, the Macaé hub will be built in partnership with the Vale Azul group.

New Natural Gas Hubs in São Luís/MA and Macaé/RJ Are Part of Eneva’s Strategy
In the city of Macaé, it is estimated that it will possibly become a hub for storage, processing, and distribution of natural gas produced in the Campos and Santos basins. During the Eneva Investor Day event, Lopes stated that Eneva has been working to achieve complete national coverage in relation to access to natural gas, so creating two new hubs is essential to Eneva’s strategy, which aims to enter the integrated grid.
The executive also discussed the choice of locations where the natural gas hubs will be built, especially Macaé, where, according to Lopes, there has been an increase in natural gas production in Brazil, which could reach about 100 million cubic meters per day in the coming years.

Giant reservoirs with a capacity of 18 million cubic meters have turned Fujairah into one of the largest energy vaults on the planet. This facility, located outside the Strait of Hormuz, stores oil on a colossal scale and has become a silent piece that supports the global flow of fuels.
The pilot idea is to build a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) regasification terminal within the Macaé Port Terminal, to meet the need for flexibility that the country’s natural gas currently lacks. Additionally, the project is also focused on the commercialization of liquid fuels, which could turn Brazil into a major exporter of pre-salt oil.
Eneva Highlights Its Plans for the Natural Gas Hub in São Luís/MA
For the hub that will be built in São Luís, the forecast is to construct a pipeline approximately 300 km long, linking the Maranhão capital to the Parnaíba complex, where Eneva produces 8 million cubic meters of natural gas daily, to generate 2 gigawatts of electricity.
The investment so far is estimated at R$ 2 billion. The pipeline can be used for both conventional gas and for transporting unconventional gas. In Maranhão, where Eneva has its main operation, the hub will be built at the Porto do Itaqui, with one of the main reasons being the thermoelectric plants that will be constructed in cities that currently lack access to natural gas, such as the capital, São Luís.
Importance of the Hub for the Expansion of the Gas Market in São Luís
Eneva reported that Maranhão is one of the states in Brazil with significant fuel oil consumption; therefore, it is extremely important to implement the hub to facilitate the conversion of polluting fuels into natural gas.
Lopes also mentioned that another regasification terminal should also be constructed at the Porto do Itaqui, and a thermoelectric plant may follow in the future. According to him, if the implementation of natural gas in São Luís is indeed feasible, other markets could develop, such as the conversion of industries and Natural Gas Vehicles (NGV).
