Glencore Is Now Preparing Its Mine With 100% Of Its Fleet Electrified, One Of The First In The Global Mining Sector, And Has Acquired 23 Equipment Units From Epiroc To Ensure State-Of-The-Art Technology In The New Venture.
The Glencore company is making significant progress on its mining project with 100% of its fleet electrified, one of the first in this segment worldwide. The company acquired a total of 23 battery-powered equipment units from Epiroc for use in the new mining plant. This way, there will not only be greater environmental efficiency but also more automation and assurance of quality in nickel exploration.
Glencore’s Electrified Fleet Mining Project Will Feature Epiroc’s Battery-Powered Mining Equipment For Greater Sustainability In Operations
Epiroc recently announced a new and significant partnership in the global mining sector focused on sustainability, a supply contract with Glencore for equipment and machinery.
The company is developing a mine with an electrified fleet, and Epiroc is responsible for supplying a large portion of the essential machines needed to develop automation and sustainability in the clean mining project.

Glencore is moving full speed ahead with the development of a new nickel and copper mine in Ontario, Canada, expected to begin operations in 2024, and is now investing in a new segment of mining—electrification of operations.
This is because the mine will be one of the first with 100% of its fleet electrified, with 23 pieces of equipment from Epiroc contributing to this. Among the battery-powered equipment supplied by the company, Glencore’s electrified fleet includes Scooptram loaders, Minetrucks, Boomer face drill rigs, Boltec and Cabletec bolting rigs, and Simba drill rigs.
Moreover, all equipment at Glencore’s mine will be equipped with Epiroc’s Rig Control System technology, making them ready for automation and remote control. The mining company will then have greater efficiency and control over its operations, minimizing the environmental impacts of nickel and copper exploration in the sector.
Additionally, the systems will also allow for the integration of machine functionalities to ensure greater efficiency and a significant increase in daily productivity, reducing costs and operation time at the sustainable mine.
Company Celebrates Partnership With Glencore For Supply Of Equipment For The Electrified Copper And Nickel Mine Fleet And Anticipates Market Expansion
Executive Helena Hedblom, President and CEO of Epiroc, commented on the new partnership with Glencore and stated that the company is making a significant leap in the global mining market with the new contract. Furthermore, she emphasized that the company is excited to provide its state-of-the-art battery-powered equipment to contribute to the mining company’s sustainability plan for its project.
Peter Xavier, Vice President of Integrated Nickel Operations at Glencore, commented on the future of sustainable mining and the mine’s projections, stating that “Epiroc scored high in areas such as safety, design, and testing of the entire battery system. Epiroc also offers high-capacity batteries, uses a standard CCS charging protocol, has a battery swap system, and the designs are universal and compatible. Additionally, the batteries have integrated cooling and safety systems.”
Among the benefits of using an electrified fleet are the elimination of emissions in operations, reduction of noise pollution, and cost savings. Thus, Glencore is now investing not only in sustainability but also in logistics and production improvements for its nickel and copper mine.
