Equinor Is Focused on Expanding Its Research Projects for Oil Exploration in the Brazilian Pre-Salt. The Company’s Investment Will Be Directed to Partnerships with CNPEM, UFSC, and Unicamp.

The global energy company Equinor announced this Thursday, (10/08), a strategic investment of R$ 42 million in research and development in Brazil, aimed at the pre-salt sector. This commitment reflects the ongoing pursuit of technological advancements and sustainable innovations in oil exploration, strengthening its partnership with renowned academic institutions in the field of research.

Equinor Prepares for Funding Injection for Pre-Salt Exploration Research

The global energy giant, Equinor, reaffirms its commitment to sustainable advancements in the oil and gas industry by announcing a strategic investment in research and development (R&D) focused on pre-salt reserves in Brazil.

With the aim of driving innovation, Equinor will allocate significant resources, totaling R$ 42 million, to finance research and development in the pre-salt sector.

These investments will be directed both to enhance key infrastructures and to partnerships with prestigious academic institutions. Among them are the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp), the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), and the Centro Nacional de Pesquisa em Energia e Materiais (CNPEM).

These partnerships aim to broaden knowledge about oil exploration in the pre-salt and open new horizons for the sector.

The collaboration between Equinor and Unicamp focuses on analyzing the characteristics of the rocks present in the pre-salt reserves. The focus is on porosity, permeability, and the behavior of these rocks concerning different types of oil.

The partnership between Equinor and UFSC aims to understand the complex interactions between different fluids and the reservoir rocks of the pre-salt.

Using advanced microtomographic analysis techniques at Sirius, a digital protocol is being developed to investigate these interactions, paving the way for more accurate numerical simulations.

Finally, the collaboration between Equinor and CNPEM has a clear focus: strengthening the scientific infrastructure of the country. Specifically, the partnership aims to develop the Mogno beamline, allowing detailed and advanced analyses of pre-salt samples, thus contributing to more sustainable exploration.

Equinor Advances in Investments Targeting the New Light Source Sirius in Brazil

In the current market for research related to oil exploration, a remarkable achievement emerges: Sirius, a groundbreaking innovation in the field of physics and technology.

This is Brazil’s latest synchrotron light source, which plays a fundamental role in exploring the frontiers of knowledge.

At the core of Sirius lies its unique ability to produce synchrotron light, a type of highly intense and broad-spectrum electromagnetic radiation.

This feat is achieved through large particle accelerators that impart energy to electrons at incredible speeds, resulting in synchrotron light emissions that illuminate the microcosm of matter.

Thus, by investing in research at Sirius, Equinor reinforces its position as a pioneering company committed to innovation and research in the field of pre-salt oil exploration in Brazil.

The president of Equinor in Brazil, Veronica Coelho, highlighted: “Investing in technology and innovation is crucial to optimizing the oil and gas sector, accelerating renewable energy projects, and developing low-carbon solutions, in line with our global strategy. In this regard, we have been working to promote the development of solutions that contribute to the efficiency of our operations while stimulating science in our country.”

Now, Equinor will continue to manage the million-dollar investment in pre-salt exploration research to bring even more innovation to the national oil market.
