Artificial Intelligence Reduces Operational Costs in Pipelines by Using Predictive Maintenance and Preventive Analyses to Avoid Corrective Maintenance.
The evolution of Artificial Intelligence has revolutionized various sectors, including pipelines. Companies have adopted new technologies to facilitate predictive maintenance, thus reducing operational expenses. With the growth of natural gas in Brazil, the use of advanced analytical methods allows for action before more serious problems occur, promoting not only savings but also continuous efficiency in processes. The implementation of these innovations reinforces the importance of Artificial Intelligence in ensuring more sustainable energy systems.
Recent studies, such as the one by Fundação Getúlio Vargas, indicate that with the help of Artificial Intelligence, natural gas can play a prominent role in the global energy scenario by 2050. In Brazil, the addition of AI technologies is expected to significantly impact the energy matrix, making the sector more competitive and agile. The use of AI enables companies to anticipate and avoid failures, ensuring a more robust and secure operation. The future of energy operations depends on the incorporation of these modern tools, increasingly highlighting the value of computational intelligence in everyday business.
The Role of Natural Gas and Artificial Intelligence in Brazil
Natural gas is on par with complementary renewable energies, both at 27%, surpassing sources such as oil, coal, nuclear energy, and hydropower. For Brazil to maximize the benefits of this energy source, it is essential to expand supply points in the integrated pipeline network and carry out corrective maintenance. However, these processes exponentially raise costs.

Aquarela Analytics, a pioneer in Brazil in Artificial Intelligence and data analysis, has created innovative algorithms to map and analyze preventively using AI. This aims to reduce the need for corrective maintenance, which tends to incur high costs.
AI and Innovation in the Natural Gas Sector
The Nova Transportadora do Sudeste S/A (NTS), specialized in the transportation of natural gas, presented a success case at the ‘Innovations in Energy Pipelines: Fueling the Future’ Conference & Expo in Calgary, Canada, from September 23 to 27. This international event gathers members of the pipeline industry to discuss innovative trends and success cases. Marcos Santos, CEO of Aquarela Analytics, emphasized the importance of developing digital maturity and data in large global industries.
Expansions in natural gas distribution in Brazil increase the final product price due to other repair costs, leading the sector to invest in innovative technologies to predict and prevent pipeline failures. According to Sigmundo Preissler Jr., CPO of Aquarela Analytics, AI contributes to reducing maintenance costs. ‘Just to investigate possible fissures, there is an approximate cost of R$30,000,’ he explains.
Predictability and Cost Reduction with AI
The project of NTS, with Aquarela, resulted in fewer interruptions in operation, avoiding unplanned shutdowns. In certain areas, the predictability accuracy reached 81%. The company needed to identify failures and leaks effectively, aiming to improve preventive management and optimize costs associated with inspections. This reduced expenses with corrective maintenance, traditionally more expensive due to system and equipment shutdowns. Investing in predictive maintenance impacted finances less and allowed for the expansion of the contracted service nationally.
Estimates pointed to an annual savings of around R$3.3 million, focusing inspections on the right locations. During the mapping process, a machine learning model was used that incorporated data on soils, climate, topography, and incident history. ‘We structured and validated data, ensuring maximum accuracy,’ said the CEO.
Aquarela Analytics: Pioneer in Digital Transformation
For over ten years, Aquarela Analytics has led in artificial intelligence and data analysis, driving Digital Transformation towards Industry 4.0, which involves the integration of digital technologies such as the Internet of Things, AI, big data, and cloud computing. With an innovative approach and a team of over 50 professionals, the company optimizes processes, enhancing efficiency and aiding in strategic decision-making based on data.
Aquarela’s headquarters is in Florianópolis, and the company is among the 100 most attractive startups in Brazil, incubated by MIDI Tecnológico, ACATE, and Sebrae. In 2022, it received over R$10 million from Auren Energia to develop solutions focused on the free energy market. The company has seven solutions, including operational and financial optimization, dynamic pricing, and demand forecasting.
The difference with Aquarela is its proprietary AI, Aquarela Vorteris, and the DCM (Data Culture Methodology), which assesses and proposes strategic changes to increase companies’ analytical maturity. To learn more: https://aquare.la/
