Camaçari Returns to The Industry Map with BYD’s Mega Investment: Over 10,000 Jobs and A New Era for The Bahia Economy Begins Now
The city of Camaçari, located in Bahia, is about to witness an unprecedented industrial revolution. The old Ford factory, decommissioned since 2021, is now taking on new shapes with the arrival of BYD (Build Your Dreams), the Chinese giant in the electric mobility sector. With a total investment exceeding R$ 3 billion — potentially reaching R$ 5.5 billion according to recent estimates — Brazil establishes itself as one of the main destinations for the new global green industry.
A Factory to Lead The Era of Electrics in Latin America
BYD’s new plant will be the largest production center for electric vehicles of the automaker outside China. The forecast is that the unit will begin production of electric cars in 2025, with an initial capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year. However, the company’s goal is ambitious: to make the Camaçari factory an export hub for all of Latin America.
Stella Li, global vice president of BYD, stated in an interview with Reuters that Brazil occupies a strategic place in the company’s international expansion plans. “Our goal is to develop here an industrial base that is as modern and technological as any of our units in China,” she declared.

It seems to have come out of a science fiction movie: A Brazilian city where it rains almost every day, recording over 4,000 mm per year, driven by climatic factors — a direct result of its strategic location in the Amazon.
A New Industrial Cycle for Bahia
After the closure of the Ford factory, the Camaçari region faced mass unemployment and billion-dollar losses to the local economy. With BYD’s arrival, the scenario is changing radically: more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs are expected by 2026, according to the state government.
Bahia’s governor, Jerônimo Rodrigues, has been personally monitoring the progress of the project. “This is more than just a factory. We are looking at a new industrial cycle for the state, this time focusing on sustainability and the generation of added value,” he stated during a visit to the construction site.

Three Factories, One Mission: Accelerate The Energy Transition
The BYD manufacturing complex will be divided into three large units:
- Electric Car Factory: production of 100% electric vehicles focusing initially on the national market and, eventually, export to South American countries.
- Chassis Factory for Electric Buses and Trucks: reinforcing BYD’s commitment to sustainable public transport, especially in cities like São Paulo and Salvador.
- Lithium and Iron-Phosphate Processing Factory: aimed at local manufacturing of the batteries used in vehicles, reducing logistics costs and increasing operational autonomy.
Additionally, a professional training center will be built in partnership with SENAI and local universities to train workers in the fields of mechatronics, robotics, vehicle electronics, and supply chain management.
Sustainability at The Center of The Project
BYD’s new factory will be designed based on principles of environmental sustainability. The following facilities are planned:
- Solar Panels for Self-Sufficient Energy Supply;
- Industrial Water Reuse Systems;
- Recovery of Materials used in lithium batteries;
- Zero Emissions on the assembly line.
According to InsideEVs, the project aims to fully meet ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) criteria, with public goals for carbon footprint reduction and international certifications for clean production.
Challenges and Timeline
Despite the optimism, the project faces some challenges. According to Reuters, delays in the environmental approval process and negotiations with local unions could push the full operation of the plant to the end of 2026. Initially, production will start with CKD (completely knocked down) kits imported from China and will be gradually nationalized.
BYD itself estimates that the operation will only reach full capacity in December 2026, consolidating Camaçari as the largest electric mobility hub in the Southern Hemisphere.
Brazil as A Leader in Clean Mobility?
BYD’s bet on Brazil reinforces the country’s potential to lead the transition to a low-carbon economy. With a predominantly renewable energy matrix, vast lithium reserves, and a robust domestic market, the country emerges as an ideal platform for the advancement of electromobility.
The establishment in Camaçari is not only a response to the demand for clean vehicles but also a geopolitical positioning strategy: to compete with Europe and the United States in the global race for green automotive technology.
The Future Begins Now in Camaçari
The old Ford factory was once a symbol of the industrial peak in the Northeast. Now, under new direction, the complex is reborn as a symbol of innovation, sustainability, and productive inclusion. The big question that remains is: can BYD’s success serve as a model for other Brazilian regions seeking economic revitalization?
With cutting-edge technology, ambitious social goals, and a declared environmental commitment, BYD inaugurates not just a factory, but a new chapter for Brazil in the 21st century.
