Amid Flexibility And Competitive Prices, The Free Energy Market Attracts Thousands Of Consumers.
In the first eight months of 2023, Brazil witnessed a significant shift in how companies acquire their energy. A growing wave of corporations has been navigating toward the free energy market, driven by the advantages of selecting suppliers and establishing customized contractual terms. Surprisingly, more than 4,800 consumer units joined the market during this period, surpassing the total number from the previous year (4,600), according to statistics from the Electric Energy Trade Chamber – CCEE.
Currently, the free market has 35,542 consumers, which corresponds to 37% of the total energy consumption in Brazil. Mainly, they are industries and medium to large companies, especially in the Commerce And Services sectors, looking to expand their options and autonomy.

Why This Growing Attraction To The Free Market?
Talita Porto, leader on the Board of Directors of CCEE, highlights the promising outlook. “A favorable climate and the modest growth in demand in recent times have caused prices to plummet, making the free market extremely attractive. And, undoubtedly, the trading companies are focused on reaching out to smaller clients, anticipating the imminent opening in January 2024,” she comments.
The flexibility for joining the free market has been one of the main flags of the sector. With the collaboration of the Ministry of Mines and Energy – MME and the National Electric Energy Agency – ANEEL, CCEE seeks to simplify the entry criteria. A recent achievement was the MME Ordinance No. 50/22, which starting next year will allow all those connected at high voltage to opt for migration.
Without a doubt, CCEE, the entity that facilitates energy buying and selling transactions throughout the country, is already preparing for this revolution. In addition to intensifying its operations, it has recently launched an advanced electronic signature system, based on blockchain technologies, making the joining process faster and more secure.
Profile Of New Consumers
The majority of new adherents to the free energy market come from the Commerce and Services sectors, especially in the Southeast and South regions, given the high industrialization of these areas. However, when it comes to actual consumption, it is the industries related to the metallurgical segment that historically consume the most electricity in Brazilian territory.
