Renewable Energy Project on the Coast of Santa Catarina Shows How a Solar Farm Reduces CO₂ Emissions, Generates Savings, and Replaces the Environmental Impact Equivalent to Planting Thousands of Trees

A sustainable initiative in the construction industry has begun to gain prominence in the South of Brazil. According to an article published by the NSC Total website this Friday (19), a solar farm in Santa Catarina, installed in the municipality of Porto Belo, has already avoided the emission of CO₂ equivalent to the planting of approximately 2,000 trees, according to data released by the construction company J.A. Russi.

In operation for almost a year, the structure is consolidating itself as one of the main examples of corporate use of solar energy in the state. In addition to significantly reducing environmental impact, the project also presents substantial financial results, reinforcing that sustainability and economic viability can walk hand in hand.

Solar Farm in Santa Catarina Has Already Avoided Tonnes of CO₂ Emissions

Clean energy generation has become a strategic asset, from both an environmental and business perspective, aligning with the ESG practices adopted by companies in the real estate sector. The solar farm of J.A. Russi occupies an area of 9,200 square meters, equivalent to about 1.3 football fields, and has 1,338 photovoltaic panels installed. Since the beginning of operations, the plant has already avoided the release of nearly 23 tonnes of CO₂ emissions into the atmosphere.

This volume of greenhouse gas reduction is comparable to the positive environmental impact generated by the planting of about 2,000 trees, considering widely used metrics in environmental studies and sustainability reports. The direct reduction of emissions reinforces the role of solar energy in combating climate change, especially when applied on a large scale by medium and large companies.

Solar Energy Drives Energy Efficiency and Financial Savings

In the first 11 months of operation, the solar plant generated approximately 700,000 kWh of solar energy, reaching 87% of the projected annual goal. This performance highlights the efficiency of the photovoltaic system and its capacity to meet the energy demand of the projects served.

In addition to environmental benefits, solar energy has brought substantial financial savings. The construction company estimates that the reduction in electricity costs reached about R$ 300,000 during the analyzed period.

The predictability of expenses and the reduction of dependence on the conventional electrical grid make the investment even more strategic in a scenario of constant tariff adjustments.

Distribution of Solar Energy Between Porto Belo and Itapema

Although installed in Porto Belo, the solar farm currently supplies two company projects located in Itapema, a neighboring city. The generated energy is strategically distributed to maximize the efficiency of the system.

Currently, about 70% of the produced solar energy is directed to the Calçadão Praia Shopping, while the remaining 30% supplies the construction company’s administrative office.

This energy compensation model allows the company to use the plant’s production in an integrated manner, enhancing environmental gains and reducing the CO₂ emissions associated with the electricity consumption of its operations.

Investment in Solar Farm Strengthens ESG Agenda

The total investment in the solar farm in Santa Catarina was approximately R$ 5 million. According to the company, the project is directly linked to the ESG strategy of the group, which seeks to reduce environmental impacts and encourage sustainable practices in the construction sector.

The president of the J.A. Russi Group, Suzana de Fátima Russi Chiamenti, emphasized that the initiative goes beyond legal obligations and represents a voluntary commitment to the environment.

Adopting sustainable technologies, such as solar energy, is a concrete way to contribute to environmental preservation and encourage the market to follow the same path, she stated. The declaration reinforces the perception that projects of this size help create a culture of sustainability both within and outside the real estate sector.

Garden Open Mall Will Be Fully Supplied by Solar Energy

The company’s energy strategy foresees important advances in the coming years. With an inauguration scheduled for June 2026, the Garden Open Mall in Itapema will be entirely powered by the solar farm, as reported by the construction company.

The project will be one of the only shopping centers in Southern Brazil to operate with 100% solar energy, significantly increasing the positive environmental impact of the plant.

The project involves an estimated investment of R$ 100 million, with a Gross Leasable Area of 2,500 square meters, around 50 commercial operations, and an estimated Total Rent Value of R$ 8 million per year.

The initiative consolidates the use of solar energy as a central pillar of large commercial projects, reducing the carbon footprint from the operational phase.

Santa Catarina Expands Protagonism in Solar Energy

The case of the solar farm in Santa Catarina reflects a broader movement observed in the state. Santa Catarina ranks among the national leaders in distributed solar energy generation, driven by the combination of favorable climatic conditions and greater adoption by companies and consumers.

The adoption of photovoltaic systems has allowed the state to reduce CO₂ emissions, diversify the energy matrix, and strengthen the security of electricity supply. Large-scale corporate projects amplify this impact, especially when associated with commercial centers, offices, and high-energy-consuming real estate developments.

Solar Energy, Trees, and Measurable Environmental Impact

The equivalence between the reduction of CO₂ emissions and the planting of trees helps to translate technical data into more understandable information for the public. Although reforestation is essential, solar energy directly acts at the source of emissions, preventing the gas from being released into the atmosphere.

While a tree can take years to reach its maximum carbon absorption potential, the solar farm generates an immediate positive impact. This direct effect makes solar energy one of the most effective tools in mitigating climate change, especially in urban and corporate environments.

A Sustainable Model That Unites Economy and Environmental Preservation

The experience of the solar farm in Santa Catarina demonstrates that it is possible to combine economic growth, reduction of CO₂ emissions, and environmental preservation in a single project. By compensating for the impact equivalent to the planting of 2,000 trees, the initiative reinforces the strategic role of solar energy in the future of construction.

As new projects begin to operate entirely with clean energy, the trend is that models like this will become benchmarks in the sector, consolidating Santa Catarina as one of the national hubs of innovation in renewable energy.
