Fiemg Now Aims to Attract More Investments for the Biofuels Sector in Minas Gerais and Presented Data on the Growth Potential of Biogas and Biomethane Production in the State, Which Is the Second Largest in the Country Regarding Generation Capacity.
Last Tuesday, (07/12), the Chamber of the Energy, Oil and Gas Industry and the Environment and Sustainable Development Council of the Federation of Industries of the State of Minas Gerais (Fiemg) presented to the Government of Minas a report on the potential of the state regarding the production of biomethane and biogas. Thus, it was emphasized the significant leap that the region can take with the necessary investments in the sector over the coming years.
Minas Gerais Has High Potential to Expand Biofuel Production in the Coming Years, According to Fiemg Report
The Fiemg report on the potential for biofuel production in the state of Minas Gerais is titled “Policy Proposals for Promoting Biogas in Minas Gerais,” as announced by the newspaper Diário do Comércio, and was presented to the state government last Tuesday. In this way, Fiemg highlighted that the region can generate 1.3 billion normal cubic meters (Nm3) of energy per year.
Additionally, it was noted that Minas Gerais can increase its installed capacity in this segment by 10 times, as it has the potential to grow from 33 MW of installed capacity to 308 MW, if it secures the necessary investments for project development and ventures in this sector.

Brazil bets on biomethane, ethanol, and hydrogen as the definitive solutions for the decarbonization of heavy vehicles and the reduction of emissions in cargo transportation.
Thus, Fiemg’s energy manager, Tânia Mara Santos, emphasized the state’s relevance in the sector to Diário do Comércio and stated: “We are the second state with the greatest biogas and biomethane generation potential in the country. These energies come from agro-industrial waste, landfills, and industrial waste, which are essential inputs for this market to expand businesses, jobs, and income. In fact, we are seeking investors, having a group interested in this investment.”
Furthermore, in addition to contributing to the economy and the biofuels market, biogas and biomethane production in Minas Gerais also allows for a significant reduction in environmental impacts. This is because the report indicates a reduction of 12.8 million tons in carbon dioxide emissions per year. Thus, the state will be able to replace commonly used fuels in the market by adopting biofuels.
Minas Gerais Already Has Investments Expected to Total R$ 7.7 Billion for the Biomethane and Biogas Production Market
The Fiemg report on biomethane and biogas production in the state of Minas Gerais also pointed out what the expected investments for the sector are. Thus, the study indicated that there are about ten proposals in the application phase, with investments of R$ 7.7 billion.
To move these projects forward, the state is considering some incentives to attract investors, including requesting a reduction in the rates on the taxes for biogas and biomethane, in order to accelerate the development of this market, as a way to encourage the development of projects for this production in the region.
Finally, Fiemg’s forecasts also indicated that the biogas and biomethane market could create 60,000 direct and indirect jobs and an increase in the wage mass of R$ 1 billion over the next five to ten years, significantly contributing to the socioeconomic growth of the state.
Thus, the federation intends to work with the state government to ensure that these investments are attracted in the best possible way, aiming to expand Minas Gerais’ presence in the national economy.
