Understand What The Traffic Law Determines
Contrary to what many think, several elderly individuals aged 60 or older are capable of driving their vehicles daily and very well. However, those aged 50 or older should be mindful of the new traffic law, which has been in effect since April 2021.
The Law No. 14,071/2020 Amended The Brazilian Traffic Code And Defined The New Validity Periods For The CNH. The new traffic law determines the time required for document renewal. Drivers aged 70 or older are subjected to shorter renewal periods, according to the portal Justos.

With the new traffic law, drivers under the age of 50 must renew their license every 10 years, while drivers aged 50 and older but under 70 must renew every 5 years. Drivers aged 70 or older must renew their licenses every 3 years. The Provisional CNH is valid for 1 year.
How To Renew The CNH Under The New Traffic Law
The CNH renewal must be done no later than 30 days after the document expires. To carry out the procedure, simply go to your state’s Detran and pay the fee. Drivers should also be mindful of the document’s expiration, which has changed with the new traffic law, as one cannot drive a vehicle without a CNH. The violation is severe, with a fine of R$ 283.47, and an addition of 7 points on the license.
To renew, it is necessary to access the website of the State Department of Transit (Detran) of your state, log in using your CPF or CNPJ and password, confirm your personal data, and follow the instructions to request CNH renewal.
Finally, a bill introduced in February 2024 may affect the elderly. The Senate’s Committee on Economic Affairs (CAE) approved the PL 5153/2023.
The new bill aims to offer a 50% discount on the national driver’s license renewal fee for drivers aged 50 and older and 70% for elderly individuals aged 70 and above. According to the Metrópoles portal, the text has moved to be reviewed by the Committee on Constitution and Justice (CCJ) of the Upper House and, after this process, will go to the plenary.
Types Of National Drivers License

Category A
Driver of a motorized vehicle with two or three wheels, with or without a sidecar.
Category B
Driver of a motorized vehicle not covered by Category A.
Category C
Driver of a vehicle used for cargo transportation with a gross weight exceeding 3,500 kg.
Category D
Driver of a motorized vehicle used for passenger transport with a capacity not exceeding eight seats.
Category E
Driver of a combination of vehicles where the tractor unit falls under categories B, C, or D.
