THE END OF THE TRADITIONAL ID? The General Registry (RG), an essential document for the identification of Brazilians, is undergoing a historic transformation. The implementation of the new National Identity Card (CIN) promises not only to replace the traditional RG but also to bring a series of innovations that modernize and simplify citizens’ lives. With a more secure design and the integration of information such as CPF, the CIN aims to reduce fraud and make access to public and private services more efficient. This milestone represents a new era in personal identification in Brazil.
Understand the Importance of the New Documentation and the End of the Traditional ID as We Know It
Once it not only unifies up to five documents into one, but it can already be requested for free in 25 states and the Federal District. However, the old document has an expiration date, and Brazilians have received an ultimatum to regularize the new document as soon as possible.
The new ID brings significant advancements, including the replacement of the traditional RG number with the CPF as the national identifier and the inclusion of features such as:
-
Rare frog thought to be extinct after only appearing in fossils reappears, becoming a ‘living relic’ of evolution and gaining a real path to spread after combating introduced predators.
-
House without a door and without a window: a resident lives high in the mountains, says he enjoys the “free life,” mentions that the cat comes and goes hunting bats and rats, and that when it rains he wakes up with wet feet.
-
Satellite images show that Morocco became so green in 2026 that the country looks different from space: two months of heavy rains transformed arid land into dense vegetation for the first time in a decade.
-
Archaeologists were excavating the foundation of a historic house in Russia when they discovered a buried treasure with gold coins, left behind in the final days of the Russian Empire and now valued at over R$ 2.8 million.
- Social inclusion, as it allows for the registration of conditions such as autism spectrum disorder and the NIS;
- QR Code, which facilitates authentication and increases the security of the document;
- Information integration, incorporating data from other documents such as voter ID, driver’s license, work card, professional registration, and vaccination record.
Thus, the new ID represents a technological and administrative advancement, unifying essential information in a single registry. In summary, the new documentation that will bring an end to the traditional ID, also known as National Identity Card (CIN), is being implemented in Brazil to modernize and simplify the identification of citizens.
The new ID unifies up to five documents into one, including voter ID, driver’s license, work card, professional registration, and vaccination record.
How to Get the New Documentation?
The new ID can be requested in person at the issuing agency in the state of residence and in just 3 steps. The first copy is free, however, some requirements must be met.
Among the documents required for the new documentation are the birth or marriage certificate, regularized CPF, and minors under 16 years old must be accompanied by a legal guardian. After presenting the documents, the agency will verify the information on Gov.br and inform the timeframe for the collection of the physical document.
The new documentation, which will bring an end to the traditional ID, is already available in 25 states and the Federal District:
- Southeast: Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo;
- Central-West: Federal District, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul;
- South: Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina;
- North Region: Acre, Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia, Tocantins;
- Northeast: Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Maranhão, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, Sergipe.
It is important to mention that the old ID has an expiration date. According to the portal, its validity goes until 2032, making the exchange mandatory from that date. This means that those who have not yet issued the new document must organize themselves, as the goal is to ensure that all citizens are identified by the unified model.
More Than 15.6 Million Have Already Obtained the New ID
The new document designates the CPF as the unique number for the identification of citizens in public service databases. Furthermore, the document will be integrated nationally, as before each citizen could have up to 27 different IDs, one for each state.
In total, 15.6 million CINs have already been issued, and the state of São Paulo, for example, has already announced that it will no longer issue the old General Registry (RG) in the state and will only issue the new CIN. Minas Gerais is the state that has issued the most documents, with over 1.8 million CINs issued. If considered by the percentage of the population, it is Piauí.
