United States Air Force Unveils Its New B-21 Raider, First Of Its Kind To Be Launched In 30 Years That Will Replace The Models Used During The Cold War.
Last Friday (2), the United States Air Force (USAF) and Northrop Grumman Corporation unveiled the B-21 Raider, which joins the nuclear triad as a flexible deterrent to enable the USAF to fulfill its most complex missions. However, initial test flights are only scheduled for next year.
B-21 Raider Is The Future Of The United States Air Force
According to Northrop Grumman CEO and President Kathy Warden, the company team develops and provides technology that advances science, looks to the future, and brings it to the present. The B-21 Raider defines a new era in technology and consolidates America’s role in ensuring peace through deterrence.
According to reports, the new aircraft forms the backbone of the future power of the United States Air Force, leading a powerful family of systems that provides a new era of capability and flexibility through advanced integration of data, weapons, and sensors. Its sixth-generation features include stealth, open architecture, and information advantage. Words from Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III, the B-21 Raider is proof of the enduring advantages of the United States in terms of ingenuity and innovation. And it stands as a testament to the Department’s long-term commitment to developing advanced capabilities that consolidate the United States Air Force’s ability to deter aggression, both now and in the future.
Now, strengthening and maintaining deterrence of the U.S. is at the center of its National Defense Strategy. Austin emphasizes that this bomber was built with strong bipartisan support in Congress and due to that support, the country will soon be flying the aircraft, testing it, and entering production.
A Billion-Dollar Fleet
This is the first aircraft of its kind to be launched in 30 years, and the goal is for it to gradually replace the United States Air Force aircraft that flew during the Cold War.
Each bomber could cost around US$ 700 million, R$ 3.654 billion in direct conversion, and the United States plans to have about 100 of them in its fleet.
In total, US$ 203 billion will be invested in the program to develop, operate, and purchase the B-21s. Although the press conference has already seen the model from a distance, expectations are that the model will be seen in the skies only in 2023.
B-21 Raider Is Capable Of Networking Across The Entire Battlefield
The B-21 Raider is capable of connecting across the entire battlefield. Supported by a digital ecosystem throughout its life cycle, the aircraft can rapidly evolve through fast technology updates that provide new capabilities to outpace future threats.
Throughout the embedded technology, the aircraft is presented as the world’s first sixth-generation aircraft. According to Corporate Vice President and President of Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems, Tom Jones, with the new aircraft, the United States Air Force will have the capacity to deter or defeat threats anywhere in the world.
The B-21 Raider demonstrates how Northrop Grumman is leading the industry in engineering and digital transformation, delivering much more value to its customers. The model is named in honor of the Doolittle Raids of World War II, when 80 men, led by Lieutenant Colonel James “Jimmy” Doolittle, and 16 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers embarked on a mission that changed the world. The designation B-21 recognizes the Raider as the first bomber of this century.
