Foresea Unveils Innovative Drill Pipe Gauge Method Using Ultrasonic Technology to Enhance Safety and Efficiency in Offshore Drilling at ROG.e
Foresea has revealed innovative technology that promises to revolutionize pipeline monitoring, bringing significant benefits to offshore drilling. Utilizing ultrasonic waves, this new approach enables precise detection of obstructions, resulting in greater safety and efficiency during operations. The presentation took place at the latest ROG.e conference, highlighting Foresea’s leadership in the sector.
During the event, the offshore drilling company demonstrated how this pioneering technology can transform the current landscape, offering a robust solution to increase process accuracy. Foresea, recognized as a leader in Brazil, continues to drive significant advancements in the industry. The use of ultrasonic techniques in identifying tubular blocks is an important milestone for operational safety. These developments underscore Foresea’s commitment to innovation and efficiency in offshore drilling.
Event and Presentation of Foresea
At one of the largest Oil and Gas events in Latin America, Foresea showcased an innovative method for detecting obstructions in drilling pipes. The offshore drilling company presented its solution based on the use of ultrasonic waves combined with a developed algorithm specifically for the project. This methodology promises to provide greater precision, safety, and efficiency for a critical procedure in offshore drilling: the gauging of drill pipes.

Obstruction Problems and Traditional Gauging
Occasional obstructions, such as solid debris, drilling fluid build-ups, like mud, and sedimentary debris, can impact corrosion, structural damage, or even clog tools and bit jets. This can negatively affect operational performance and even lead to severe failures and accidents. Currently, prevention of these problems is done through inspection with a physical gauge, manually inserted into the tubular sections of platforms, generating operational risks and unwanted delays.
Partnership and Technological Research
Due to its importance in ensuring safety, gauging is the focus of researchers seeking to enhance the process. Along with the Offshore SPOT startup from Itajubá (MG), Foresea explored several inspection techniques for drill pipes, including radiography and endoscopy. The ultrasonic technology, however, proved to be the most advantageous—economical and requiring less complexity in application—offering precision, portability, and efficient results.
Functioning of ODS
Called ODS (Obstruction Detection System), the gauging method using ultrasonic waves allows the detection of obstructions in the pipeline, indicating the exact location and the percentage of blockages. The waves used include longitudinal, transverse, and torsional ultrasonic wave columns, which complement each other to provide a detailed image of the inside of the drilling pipes. When encountering an obstruction, the ultrasonic waves generate an echo, the analysis of which reveals the position and nature of the blockage.
Longitudinal ultrasonic waves travel through the piping in the direction of the initial propagation, while the torsional wave touches the pipe wall, assisting in the detection of partial obstructions. The degree of wave attenuation can even identify the type of material obstructing the pipe.
Promising Advances and Future Testing
Foresea continues with laboratory trials to further improve the interpretation of the waves generated by the ODS system. The next phase will include field tests to validate performance under real offshore operating conditions. Once implemented, the solution promises to bring precision, reliability, and safety to the gauging process. This pioneering project may eventually be extended to different types of vessels and equipment used in the offshore sector.
Conclusions and Thanks from the Director of Innovation
‘The ODS is a significant technological advancement that Foresea is proud to offer to the offshore sector,’ says Alessandro Pasini, Innovation Manager and project coordinator. ‘It is a decisive contribution that we hope will be widely adopted.’ With this technology, the sector can avoid operational failures and accidents, increasing efficiency and safety in drilling operations.
