Miko Marine Will Provide Magnetic Hull Closures for Modec’s FPSO That Will Operate in the Bacalhau Offshore Field Located in the Pre-salt of the Santos Basin

The Norwegian company Miko Marine will deliver four cofferdams and water ingress seals for a Modec FPSO being constructed at a shipyard in China that will operate in Equinor’s Bacalhau field in the Brazilian pre-salt of the Santos Basin. According to the company, the new sea chest inlet covers are scheduled for delivery in March 2021.

These equipments feature Miko’s magnetic accessories and will be available for installation and repeated use without the need for welding or permanent fixtures on the hull.

“They provide the benefit of allowing repairs and maintenance to be carried out within sea chests whenever necessary and without the need for dry docking, thus allowing the FPSO to remain on station,” said Miko Marine.

The Modec FPSO project in the Bacalhau field will use high-power permanent magnets to position and hold the cover in place. Depending on the size of the cover, four to ten powerful Miko MAM permanent magnets are used to keep the cofferdam in place.

“With each magnet capable of supporting up to 2,000 kg, it is possible to achieve an immediate watertight seal for the closures, without the need for any other fastening device being installed on the hull. The buoyancy material is integrated into the sealing plates, making them neutrally buoyant and easy to handle underwater by ROVs “, explained Miko Marine.

Additionally, Miko stated that each magnet is attached to its closure by a flexible joint that allows the plate to be maneuvered and positioned precisely against the hull of Modec’s FPSO before being tightened in place.

“When the repair work is completed, the magnets are simply released with their release lever turned by a diver or ROV, allowing the raw piece to be quickly retrieved by a crane and stored on board”, said the Norwegian company.
