IFMS Is Recruiting Students for Free LIBRAS Courses with Basic and Intermediate Options in the 1st Semester of 2026. Registrations Open for Those Interested in Learning Brazilian Sign Language.

The IFMS (Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Mato Grosso do Sul) is open for registrations for free LIBRAS courses, which will be offered in the first semester of 2026.

The classes will be entirely online, allowing people from any region of Brazil to learn Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS) at no cost.

There are two options for classes: Libras Basic – Class 2026.1 and Libras Intermediate – Class 2026.1, with content adapted for different levels of knowledge.

What Do the Free Courses of the Federal Institute Offer?

The free LIBRAS courses have been structured to cater to both those who are just starting and those who already have some familiarity with the language.

The aim is to democratize access to an education that enhances social inclusion and communication between hearing and deaf individuals.

The Libras Basic modality is ideal for beginners and presents fundamental elements of the language, while the Libras Intermediate delves deeper into linguistic and cultural aspects, including more complex signs and social usage contexts.

Libras Basic: Open Doors to Start Learning

The free online LIBRAS Basic course has a workload of 40 hours and is an invitation for anyone interested to learn the sign language used in Brazil.

The content covers several essential areas, such as:

  • everyday and common vocabulary;
  • manual alphabet and fingerspelling;
  • signs related to family and school contexts;
  • common verbs and expressions.

Students can start and complete their studies at their own pace, provided they finish by June 30, 2026.

Upon completion of the course, those who pass will receive a free certificate.

Libras Intermediate: Beyond the Basics

For those who already have basic knowledge, the free Libras Intermediate course expands the repertoire with more advanced topics, including:

  • linguistic variations in LIBRAS;
  • signs in different social contexts, such as travel and sports;
  • pronouns, adverbs, and idiomatic expressions;
  • morphological aspects and facial expressions of sign language.

This module does not require formal prerequisites, but it is recommended that students complete the basic course before enrolling for better understanding of advanced topics.

Registrations Open for All of Brazil

Since the free LIBRAS courses are online, anyone residing in Brazil can register and participate, regardless of where they live.

This especially facilitates access for students seeking to improve their communication skills and promote inclusion.

The flexibility of the remote mode allows students to organize their studies according to their routines, which can be a differentiator for those who work, study, or have other responsibilities.

Why Learning LIBRAS Can Make a Difference

Studying LIBRAS opens doors not only to a new form of communication but also to professional and social opportunities.

The sign language is essential in the context of including deaf individuals in public services, schools, healthcare, and interpersonal relationships.

Additionally, training in LIBRAS can be a differentiator for professionals in various fields, such as education, healthcare, customer service, social work, and translation/interpreter services, promoting accessibility and empathy in daily interactions.

The Importance of Free and Accessible Courses

The offering of free LIBRAS courses by IFMS is an important step toward democratizing education in Brazil.

This initiative helps to reduce learning barriers and encourages students of all ages to develop skills related to cultural and linguistic diversity.

In this sense, programs like this strengthen social inclusion, broaden professional horizons, and reinforce the commitment to equality of opportunities throughout the country.
