General Motors Factory Employees in São Caetano do Sul Report That the Company’s Counterproposal Does Not Meet the Requested Demands

The stoppage by the employees at the General Motors factory in São Caetano do Sul – SP will last indefinitely, as many of the unit’s collaborators report that their rights are not being considered. “We had no other choice but to halt the company’s activities. The counterproposal made at the negotiation table falls short of what we are demanding,” said Aparecido Inácio da Silva, president of the Metalworkers Union of São Caetano do Sul, which is affiliated with Força Sindical.

General Motors Says It Is Making All Efforts to Reach an Agreement That Benefits Both Parties

“GM hopes that the situation can be resolved as soon as possible, with a viable and sustainable agreement so that our factory’s operations can be fully normalized quickly,” the automaker informed.

The São Caetano do Sul factory – SP produces about 750 vehicles per day from the Spin, Tracker, Joy, and Joy Plus models.

Automotive Industry Faces Crisis

According to Silva, GM’s management proposed a two-year agreement, in which the full inflation adjustment for the last 12 months (10.4%) would be applied to wages in February, and for 2022, the proposal was to pay only half of the INPC in February 2023.

The General Motors factory in SP also offered food assistance of R$ 350 to employees earning up to R$ 4,430 and a bonus of R$ 1,000 to be paid this month.

“We are concerned about the difficult moment in the sector, with a lack of parts for production, but the workers have nothing more to contribute, and what we ask for is practically to meet day-to-day needs,” Silva states.
