Employees at the General Motors factory in SP go on strike after rejecting the company's salary counterproposal

Employees at the General Motors plant in São Caetano do Sul report that the company's counterproposal does not meet the requested claims

The stoppage of employees at the General Motors plant in São Caetano do Sul - SP will take place indefinitely, most of the unit's employees report that their rights are not being taken into account. “We had no choice but to paralyze the company's activities. The counter-proposal made at the negotiation table is below what we are demanding”, said Aparecido Inácio da Silva, president of the Metallurgist Union of São Caetano do Sul, which is affiliated with Força Sindical.

General Motors workers at the SP plant are claiming the following rights:

  • Salary replacement based on the INPC accumulated in the last 12 months;
  • A real increase of 5% in the minimum wage, corrected by the INPC from 2016 to 2021;
  • Food stamps in the amount of R$ 1 for workers included in the new grid and R$ 500,00 for others;
  • PR (Profit Sharing) in the amount of R$ 18.000,00 with advance payment of R$ 10.000,00;
  • Advance of half of the 13th salary for February 2022;
  • Inclusion of clause on home office;
  • Five-year payment of 5%;
  • Return of the readjustment of the salary scale every six months and Christmas basket.

In addition, according to the union, the professionals still demand the maintenance of the social clauses contained in the current ACT (Collective Bargaining Agreement), particularly Clause 42, which ensures job stability for workers with occupational diseases and base date In September.

General Motors says it is making every effort to reach an agreement that is good for both parties.    

"GM hopes that the situation can be resolved as soon as possible, with a viable and sustainable agreement and that quickly the operations of our plant are fully normalized", said the automaker.  

The factory in São Caetano do Sul – SP produces around 750 vehicles per day of the Spin, Tracker, Joy and Joy Plus models.  

Automotive industry faces crisis 

According to Silva, GM management proposed a two-year agreement, with the full replacement of inflation over the last 12 months (10,4%) to be applied to salaries in February and, for 2022, the proposal was to pay only half of the INPC in February 2023.    

The General Motors factory in SP also offered food vouchers worth R$350 to employees earning up to R$4,43 and a bonus of R$1 to be paid this month.  

“We are concerned about the difficult moment in the sector, with a lack of parts for production, but the workers have nothing else to contribute, and what we ask is practically to meet the needs of everyday life”, says Silva.
