GasBrasiliano Completes Works of the Sustainable Cities Project in the President Prudente Region (SP)

In Partnership With Cocal Plant, Project’s Next Step Will Be the Commissioning of the Network and Will Be Pioneering in the Country in the Insertion of Biogas Into Exclusive Network

GasBrasiliano, the public utility for gas distribution throughout the northwestern region of the State of São Paulo, completed, on June 30, the construction works of the gas distribution network for the “Sustainable Cities” project. The next step of the project is the commissioning period of the network, a phase in which all necessary equipment and technologies for the insertion of biogas into the network will be activated prior to the start of distribution. This stage ensures that the operation is ready to be initiated with full safety.

Launched in April 2019, at the 25th Agrishow – International Agricultural Technology Fair, held in Ribeirão Preto, the Project will put the municipalities of Narandiba, Pirapozinho, and President Prudente in the national spotlight regarding the supply with biogas generated from the processing of sugarcane waste (vinasse, straw, and filter cake), being the first exclusive network of this type of gas in Brazil.

GasBrasiliano and Cocal Plant are partners in the initiative, with the former responsible for constructing the pipeline for distributing biogas in the region and the latter for producing the biogas, which can reach up to 25,000 m³/day. The project also has the partnership of the State of São Paulo’s Secretariat for Infrastructure and Environment (SIMA).

Approximately 51 kilometers of steel piping were built to connect the supply source (Cocal Plant, located in Narandiba) to the future consumer market (Narandiba, Pirapozinho, and President Prudente), in addition to 14.5 kilometers of polyethylene piping for the connection to the industrial, commercial, residential, and vehicular markets located in the urban areas of these municipalities. The total investment in the project was R$ 180 million, with R$ 30 million from GasBrasiliano for the construction of the distribution network and R$ 150 million from Cocal for the construction of the biogas production plant.

“We are very pleased with the completion of the works as scheduled in the project. Despite the difficulties posed by the pandemic and the challenges of constructing a distribution network with different levels of complexity passing through both rural and urban areas, today we celebrate the completion of this stage with great pride. It is a totally innovative project that will promote energy diversity, competitiveness for the industry, and foster the expansion of the network in other regions,” explains Alex Gasparetto, CEO of GasBrasiliano.

“This project highlights Cocal’s commitment to ASG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) values in the pursuit of decarbonizing the Brazilian energy matrix. Biogas is a green gas that represents another contribution, in addition to ethanol, for the environment. We already have all the authorizations for the commercialization of this clean energy source and soon we will start, together with GasBrasiliano, supplying the President Prudente region via an isolated gas pipeline network,” says Paulo Zanetti, Superintendent Director of Cocal.
