A New Chapter in the Economy of Santa Catarina Begins Now.
With a multimillion-dollar investment, SCGÁS has finally inaugurated the long-awaited pipeline of the Serra Catarinense Project, connecting important cities and outlining a new landscape for the industrial and commercial development of the state.
The inauguration of this ambitious pipeline, spanning over 220 kilometers, is not just a technical achievement.

According to SCGÁS, the project has received R$ 275 million in investments since its inception in 2010, representing a monumental effort to overcome the challenges posed by the complex geography of the mountainous region.
The inauguration event took place at the Lages Business Association (ACIL), bringing together local authorities and business leaders who celebrated the positive impact of this new infrastructure on the competitiveness of the local economy and sustainability.
A Transformative Infrastructure
With the aim of expanding the supply of natural gas and increasing the competitiveness of the Santa Catarina economy, the Serra Catarinense Project is not limited to the pipeline.
SCGÁS announced plans to invest around R$ 107 million by the end of 2024 to further expand the distribution network, adding 91 kilometers to the system.
This ambitious plan includes job creation in construction and maintenance, directly boosting the job market and providing a new energy source for various sectors of the economy.
Currently, Santa Catarina ranks third in Brazil in the length of the natural gas network, with 1,600 kilometers of piping and over 28,000 consumers served.
The expectation is that the new pipeline will connect at least 195 more industries by 2029, along with gas stations and commercial establishments that will benefit from this new infrastructure.
With the expansion of the network, SCGÁS predicts that around 350 new commercial businesses will also integrate into the distribution network, helping to diversify the regional economy and consolidating natural gas as an accessible and strategic energy source.
Benefits That Go Beyond the Economy
In addition to strengthening the local economy, the new Serra Catarinense pipeline stands out for promoting the use of natural gas, which is known to be a cleaner energy source.
With combustion that emits less carbon dioxide compared to other fossil fuels, natural gas helps reduce carbon footprints and aligns with global sustainability and energy efficiency goals.
As highlighted by SCGÁS’s CEO, Otmar Müller, the expansion of natural gas not only contributes to economic growth but also reinforces the state’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental preservation.
A Leap into the Future of Gas Infrastructure in Santa Catarina
The Serra Catarinense Project, which took more than a decade to complete, reflects the state’s commitment to the interiorization of natural gas and socioeconomic development.
According to director Otmar Müller, SCGÁS believes that the pipeline is just the first step toward transforming Serra Catarinense into a true industrial hub, attracting investments and stimulating job creation.
With a robust and growing gas network, Santa Catarina is ready to welcome more industries, strengthening its position in the national scenario as one of the most competitive states in terms of energy infrastructure.
However, many wonder: Can natural gas truly transform the economy of Serra Catarinense? For many experts, the answer is a clear “yes.”
The economic and environmental benefits make natural gas a promising alternative for the region, and with the planned expansion for the coming years, SCGÁS aims to continue investing in the expansion of its infrastructure and promoting natural gas as an effective and sustainable energy solution.
