Simply Filling Up At Known Stations Can Make You A Victim Of Adulterated Fuel And Cause Great Damage To Your Engine. Inspections Reveal Increasingly Sophisticated And Silent Frauds Affecting Thousands Of Drivers Across Brazil.
The choice between gasoline and ethanol still raises doubts among millions of Brazilian drivers, especially when it comes to saving money.
However, there is a silent and dangerous mistake that goes unnoticed: the lack of attention to the quality and origin of the fuel.
This oversight can compromise the entire durability of the flex engine, causing losses that go far beyond fuel efficiency or price per liter.

Fuel Adulteration: Alarming Data For 2025
Reports from the National Agency of Petroleum (ANP) reveal that, in 2024 alone, there were over 78.9 million adulterated fuel fillings reported in 18 states in Brazil.
This number represents an 18% increase compared to the previous year and shows that the problem continues to escalate.
In the Southeast region alone, nearly 60% of the irregularity cases were detected between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
A total of 1.8 billion liters of contaminated fuel were identified, a result of increasingly sophisticated frauds.
In inspections conducted in June 2025, the ANP found 14 stations in Rio de Janeiro selling gasoline with up to 92% ethanol, while the legal limit is 27%.
In São Paulo, pumps claiming to dispense additive gasoline were actually providing common fuel, often adulterated with banned solvents.
Cases of adulteration with methanol, a toxic and completely prohibited product, were caught during operations in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro.
In Espírito Santo, a scheme alternated between normal and adulterated pumps, harming thousands of consumers and deceiving control systems.
Adulterated Fuel: Loss For Flex Engines
Adulteration can occur in several ways: mixing solvents, water, non-compliant ethanol, or excess alcohol in gasoline.
The flex engine, though resilient, is not immune to these frauds.
The damages can be severe:
Clogging of injectors and filters, caused by insoluble residues present in irregular fuel.
Carbon buildup on spark plugs, valves, and combustion chambers, impairing ignition and reducing engine power.
Corrosion of internal components due to pH changes from excess water or aggressive agents present in solvents.
Irreversible damage to the fuel pump, which can seize or lose pressure.
Accelerated wear of the catalyst, increasing pollutant emissions and possibly resulting in failure in vehicle inspections.
Increased risk of electronic failures, with the injection light illuminating and the car exhibiting irregular performance.
Many of these damages only appear after weeks or months of use, making diagnosis difficult and raising maintenance costs.
How To Tell If You Filled Up With Bad Fuel
Common symptoms often appear right after refueling:
Sudden loss of performance or difficulty accelerating.
Notable increase in fuel consumption, even on short trips.
Difficulty starting, especially on cold days or in the morning.
Tremors, misfires, or unusual noises from the engine.
Warning light for electronic injection lit on the dashboard.
Strong odor or strange appearance of the fuel, noticed when opening the tank.
Upon noticing these signs, mechanics recommend visiting a trusted repair shop as soon as possible, before the damage escalates.
Inspection, Fines, And The Role Of The Consumer
The ANP has intensified inspection operations in recent years, penalizing and shutting down hundreds of suspicious stations.
Fines range from R$ 5,000 to R$ 5 million, depending on the severity of the infraction and recidivism.
In more severe cases, a station can have its license revoked and be permanently closed.
The agency advises consumers to always request a receipt and keep the proof.
If there is suspicion of adulteration, it is possible to report anonymously by calling 0800-970-0267 or visiting the ANP website.
Reports are essential for identifying problematic stations and protecting other drivers.
Essential Tips To Avoid Falling Into Traps
Prefer to refuel at recognized networks that visibly display the ANP seal.
Be suspicious of prices well below the average practiced in your city, especially during market highs.
Request a quality test, which is a consumer right.
Always observe the smell and color of the fuel at the time of refueling.
Keep the receipt until the next refueling, as it is the only way to prove where the purchase was made in case of issues.
Remember: short-term savings can turn out to be much more expensive in the future if the fuel is adulterated.
It is not enough to choose between gasoline or ethanol; the decisive factor is always the origin and purity of the product going into your car’s tank.
Given so many risks, is it worth refueling for the lowest price without knowing the true origin of the fuel?

A fiscalização tem que ser feita pela ANP! Não repasse a responsabilidade para o consumidor!
Preço não é garantia de bom combustível porque o fraudador pode simplesmente vender o combustível adulterado pelo preço do mercado normal!
