Error Checking The Raffle Number Caused A Bettor From Caxias Do Sul To Discard A Winning Ticket Worth R$ 3 Million; Prize Ended Up Reverted To FIES.

A resident of Caxias do Sul, in Rio Grande do Sul, lost a wining ticket from the Federal Lottery valued at R$ 3 million after checking the numbers of the wrong draw. The simple but fatal mistake occurred in 2017 and is still remembered today as one of the most unusual cases in the history of lotteries in the country.

According to reports at the time, the 34-year-old man had thrown away the ticket without realizing it corresponded to the correct draw, which took place days later. Caixa Econômica Federal confirmed that the prize was not redeemed within the deadline, and the amount ended up being reverted, as the law dictates, to the Student Financing Fund (FIES).

The Mistake That Cost Millions

The bettor, who preferred not to identify himself, had been a frequent player for over 12 years.

However, when checking the results, he reviewed the ticket based on a previous draw, believing he had lost.

Thus, he discarded the proof without imagining that, on that same piece of paper, was one of the biggest prizes of the year.

The case went viral at the time and caused a wide reaction throughout the country.

The city of Caxias do Sul was even informed by Caixa that there was an unclaimed winning ticket, but no one came forward with the proof.

Without the physical document, there is no way to claim the amount, as the holder of the ticket is, legally, the sole owner of the prize.

Lottery Rules And The Destination Of The Lost Prize

According to Caixa, lottery prizes must be claimed within 90 days after the draw.

If the winner does not appear within this period, the money is automatically allocated to social programs.

The amount of R$ 3 million from the lost ticket was incorporated into FIES, a fund that finances higher education for Brazilian students.

In 2017, the year of the incident, over R$ 326 million in lottery prizes went unclaimed in the country.

These amounts combined could have transformed the lives of thousands of bettors who, due to carelessness, mistakes, or forgetfulness, failed to withdraw the money.

Repercussion And Debate On Bettor Identification

The episode reignited an old discussion: should the bettor’s CPF be included on the ticket? Many experts argued that this measure could prevent cases like the gaucho’s since it would allow tracking of the winner and confirming their identity.

On the other hand, the anonymity policy is still defended by some bettors, who see discretion as a form of personal security, especially with high-value prizes.

Caixa maintains the current model, in which the physical possession of the ticket is the only valid proof for withdrawal.

Lessons From The Case: Attention And Care With The Ticket

The case of the winner ticket thrown away serves as a warning. Before discarding any bet, it is essential to confirm the draw number, the location of the raffle, and the correct date.

The ideal is to check the result on official Caixa channels or at accredited lottery shops, avoiding simple mistakes that can cost a fortune.

In addition, keeping the ticket in a safe place until the final check is a practice recommended by experts.

In accumulated draws or high-value prizes, it is worth noting the number and taking a photo of the ticket, as an additional form of proof, in case there are future doubts.

When Misfortune Comes From Carelessness

The gaucho, who asked not to be identified, stated that he continued playing the lottery even after the incident.

According to him, the mistake was a “slip” he doesn’t want to repeat. The case became a symbolic story in the betting universe, reminding us that, many times, the difference between winning and losing lies in a simple detail of attention.

Have you ever imagined losing a winner ticket due to a checking error? Do you think tickets should include the bettor’s CPF to avoid situations like this, or would that pose risks to privacy?
