GE Renewable Energy Closed a Nine-Year Contract with SPIC Brazil for the Supply of Equipment, Generators, and Other Systems to Modernize the São Simão Hydroelectric Plant Located in Goiás
GE Renewable Energy’s Hydro division has closed a contract with SPIC Brazil to lead a modernization project for auxiliary services and generating units of the São Simão hydroelectric plant. Located on the border of Goiás and Minas Gerais, in the municipalities of São Simão and Santa Vitória, the plant has six generating units capable of producing up to 1,710 MW, which is enough to supply 6 million homes.
Contract Between GE and SPIC Brazil Provides for Equipment Supply for Hydroelectric Plant Turbines
In addition to the entire project engineering, such as integration, commissioning, and assembly of the six generating units, the contract between the companies also outlines the supply of generators and auxiliary systems, as well as equipment for the hydroelectric plant turbines. The project will be supported by Power China, which is part of the consortium executing the project, where GE Renewable Energy is the leader. The company will be responsible for supplying mechanical, electrical, hydromechanical BOP systems, and SDSC.
According to Cláudio Trejger, President and CEO of the Hydro division of GE Renewable Energy, the modernization of the hydroelectric plant, which has been one of the main sources of renewable energy in Brazil for several decades, is very important for driving the energy transition.

Without a blueprint, without an engineer, and using scrap from the dump, a father spends 15 years building an 18-room castle for his daughter, featuring tram tracks, 13 fireplaces, and over 700 m², which may now be demolished.
With this new project alongside SPIC Brazil, the company demonstrates its commitment to generating reliable and accessible renewable energy for millions of people. Trejger states that his teams are working to optimize the hydroelectric plant’s operations, as well as improve its availability so that customers can make the most of their assets and the resources available to meet the energy demand in Brazil.
SPIC Brazil Comments on Partnership with GE
For SPIC Brazil CEO Adriana Waltrick, the modernization prepares the São Simão hydroelectric plant for the future, reinforcing the reliability and efficiency of its main asset for renewable energy generation in Brazil, which will utilize the latest technology.
The hydroelectric plant is located in an important and strategic location for power flow, being an essential source for the National Electricity Generation System. The project’s execution is projected to last nine years, encompassing the entire cycle of engineering, integration, development, supply, assembly, and commissioning.
The manufacturing and procurement stages of equipment components will take place at GE Renewable Energy’s unit in Taubaté and, in addition to suppliers and partners, create opportunities for other companies operating in the industry, generating a positive impact on the production chain of the sector in the country and beyond.
Meet the Companies Involved in the Modernization Project of the São Simão Hydroelectric Plant
For over a century, GE Renewable Energy has been providing innovative solutions to help Brazil overcome infrastructure challenges and improve the lives of Brazilians by taking care of health, delivering energy to businesses and cities, and also ensuring safety in travel by producing aircraft engines.
SPIC Brazil, on the other hand, is a subsidiary of the State Power Investment Corporation of China, a company focused on power generation and related projects. In the country, this translates into a partnership between financial strength and the expertise of a large Chinese group with 20 years of experience in renewable energy. Currently, the company operates the São Simão hydroelectric plant and 2 electric furnaces in Paraíba, generating jobs for over 200 people located in São Paulo (SP), São Simão (GO), Mataraca (PB), and Natal (RN).
