The incidents are being investigated by the companies. The first incident occurred on Sunday (7) and left one turbine on fire, emitting black smoke. The other incident happened on Monday (8) and involved the fall of a wind generator from the top of the tower.
In a statement, multinational General Electric said that an “incident” was registered at the Rei dos Ventos wind farm. “No one was injured. We are working with the park owner and authorities to ensure safety in the impacted area and identify the root cause of the incident.”

According to AES Brazil, two wind generators were affected, but it also emphasized that there were no victims and no material damage to third parties. “Prioritizing people’s safety, as soon as the first occurrence was identified, circulation in the area where the equipment is located began to be controlled and the machines at the Rei dos Ventos 3 park were turned off,” it explained, without going into details.
AES Brazil acquired the Rei dos Ventos wind farm in 2020, in a transaction that also included other wind assets that belonged to J. Malucelli and involves up to R$ 650 million.
The images circulating on the internet show that one of the pieces of equipment caught fire, while part of another turbine fell from the tower where it was mounted. The authenticity of the photos was confirmed by Reuters through two sources.
The plant in Rio Grande do Norte uses wind turbines manufactured by French company Alstom, whose energy division merged with General Electric.
General Electric and AES Brazil Investigate the Incident
AES Brazil informed that it “is working with specialized advisors to identify the causes of the occurrence and ensure normalcy of the situation.” The wind farm in question has been in operation since 2014. This is not the first case registered in Brazil involving problems with General Electric wind turbines.
In 2019, there were cases of damaged equipment that needed to be halted in at least one wind farm by Omega Geração in Maranhão and at a plant by Echoenergia in Pernambuco. That year, the company also faced reports of collapses of wind machines in the USA.
In Brazil, AES has been looking to accelerate the expansion of its business focusing mainly on wind and solar power plants. General Electric is one of the largest suppliers of the wind energy sector in the country, having already supplied and installed thousands of turbines.
