Entering Adulthood Has Been a Shock for Many Young People of Generation Z. Besides Bills, There Are Comparisons with Those Who Seem to Have a Lighter and Worry-Free Routine. This Difference in Experiences, Even Among People from the Same Economic Background, Has Caused Frustration and Questioning.

Is the Generation Z prepared for adulthood? Many of them are realizing they need to pay many bills with their salary.

A Viral Scene on Social Media: A young woman from Generation Z, at 18 years old, appears outraged upon realizing that adulthood has arrived. “I Earn to Pay Bills, Mom,” she confesses.

The video was analyzed on the channel Gêmeos Investem, run by brothers Renan and Matheus — two Brazilian twins who share content about financial education and investments.

They took the opportunity to promote a sincere, humorous, and critical conversation about the challenges faced by those starting life on their own.

“It’s Bills After Bills”

The young woman, who seems to live in a comfortable environment with a gourmet balcony and a well-placed sofa, reveals that 70% of what she earns goes straight to bills.

The mother reacts with laughter, but the daughter is clearly distressed.

The discussion on the channel goes beyond the confession: the twins raise hypotheses about what kind of bills these are — gym, college, cell phone plan, perhaps even rent.

What bothers many young people of Generation Z may be the weight of comparison.

It’s common to see people of the same age and social class spending on clothes, perfumes, and leisure while others have to deal with fixed bills and rising responsibilities.

This difference in money usage, even among those with similar incomes, generates frustration and a sense of injustice — a conflict that intensifies on social media, where everything seems easier for others.

When Mom’s Fridge Seems Like a Hotel

Another segment tells the story of a young man from Generation Z who, when visiting his parents, is surprised by the new standard of the house.

The fridge, once empty, is now filled with fruits, sodas, cold cuts, and even sports drinks. “It’s like a hotel,” he jokes.

He remembers that when he lived there, there was barely a Coca-Cola. Now, with the cost of their son living away from home, the parents can maintain a better standard.

This type of discovery is common among young people who leave home. And, according to the twins, the shock is inevitable.

Once you start living alone, there are expenses never previously imagined: detergent, mop, pillowcase, pillow, fire tax, garbage bags. “No one warned me I’d have to buy pots,” one of them complains.

Freedom with a Bill

During the episode, the brothers recall how many young people grew up with the false impression that money was infinite. “A child sees their parents swiping a card and thinks that’s all there is,” they comment.

The reality, of course, is different: bills, interests, and default.

And when freedom comes, it comes with a high price. Rent, electricity, water, internet, gas, and even cleaning products weigh on the budget.

The young person leaves home expecting to buy new sneakers or go to the bar, but instead discovers their priority becomes buying detergent and rice.

Comparisons and Silent Privileges

The conversation moves on to another important point: the false idea that all young people live under the same conditions. “Some people leave their parents’ house, but with everything paid by daddy: rent, food, transport,” they comment. Others have to make do with what they have.

For the twins, the discomfort of this middle-class girl is precisely realizing that her friends have more freedom because they don’t have to pay for anything. And here comes the imbalance: she pays the bills while others have fun.

An Adult Buys Pots

One of the funniest — and most truthful — moments of the episode is when the hosts start listing the forgotten items of adulthood.

Mop, laundry detergent, burnt light bulbs, electric sponge, garbage bags. “Who knew we had to buy all this?,” one of the brothers asks. The answer is clear: no one warns.

The conclusion is that this new generation, despite the criticisms, has something that others didn’t have: a voice. Today, young people talk more about their difficulties and express themselves with more freedom. Before, many suffered in silence.

I acquired my first home at the beginning of the year. To some, lottery players appear ridiculous, while we view it as a chance for an improved future. I’m known as Megan Taylor and I have played the lottery for ten years, yet I haven’t won anything substantial.
