Outdoor exhibition made a new solution necessary

When it arrived in Chicago in 1954, the U-505 was installed as a permanent exhibit and remained exposed to the city’s weather conditions for decades. According to the institution, a German submarine from that era was designed for a much shorter operational life, while the preserved example faced nearly 50 years of rain, snow, temperature changes, and other forms of outdoor wear.

In 1997, the museum started its largest conservation project for an exhibition to date. The goal was not simply to restore the hull, but to transfer the vessel to a climate-controlled indoor environment, preventing deterioration from compromising visitor safety. The necessary work to ensure structural integrity took more than two years.
Hull was repaired before moving again
A team worked for months welding, cleaning, repairing, and repainting the U-505. Structural parts were recreated using original drawings recovered in Germany and deteriorated components used as references, while reinforcements were installed especially at points that would bear hydraulic jacks and supports during the move.
The preparation was essential because the German submarine would need to withstand forces for which a historical piece decades old could not be considered automatically ready. The movement involved weight transfer, navigating uneven terrain, suspension over large beams, and finally, a vertical descent to the floor of its new home.
Eighteen dollies placed 144 tires under the U-505

To execute the move, the museum hired NORSAR Inc., a company presented by the institution as experienced in transporting large naval objects. The chosen solution placed the vessel on 18 dollies, each equipped with eight tires, totaling 144 tires supporting and distributing the load during part of the land journey.
Each dolly had individually adjustable hydraulic systems. This allowed the weight distribution to adapt when the terrain was uneven and to control the modules separately during transit. Instead of the rails and rollers used when the U-505 arrived at the museum in 1954, the second major shift utilized dozens of tires and hydraulic control.
Submarine traveled about 300 meters on land
For several days in April 2004, the team moved the German submarine approximately 1,000 feet, about 305 meters. The destination was a new exhibition area approximately 75 feet wide, 300 feet long, and 42 feet deep, built to accommodate the vessel in an enclosed environment.
The distance was small compared to the thousands of miles traveled half a century earlier, but the challenge was of a different kind. It was necessary to move a gigantic historical artifact with enough precision to align it with the entrance to the new gallery, preserving both the hull and the structure that had just undergone years of restoration and reinforcement.
Four large beams received the vessel
Upon reaching the new gallery, the U-505 was lifted and supported on Teflon plates, used to reduce friction. The vessel then needed to advance over four large steel beams positioned over the deep space where the permanent exhibition would be placed.
This stage marked the transition between horizontal movement and the most delicate moment of the operation. After traveling along the ground on 144 tires, the submarine would need to stop rolling and begin to descend controlled over a distance equivalent to the height of four stories.
Descent equivalent to four stories took two days
Large hydraulic jacks were used to receive the vessel and begin lowering it to the lower floor. According to the museum, the German submarine descended the equivalent of four stories in an operation that took two days, finally reaching the designated position within the new gallery.
The process ended with the U-505 installed precisely in the exhibition space. The operation combined 18 sets of dollies, 144 tires, low-friction plates, four large steel beams, and hydraulic systems to guide a historic vessel over about 300 meters and then lower it four floors.
Half a Century Earlier, Challenge Began with 3,000 Miles
The 2004 move repeated, on a different scale, a problem that Chicago had faced in 1954. On May 15 of that year, a tugboat departed from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, towing the U-505 on a journey of approximately 3,000 miles. The route passed through 28 locks and four of the five Great Lakes before arriving in Chicago on June 26.
When it reached Lake Michigan, there were still about 800 feet, or roughly 244 meters, to the museum. Engineers developed a system of tracks and rollers to lift the submarine out of the water and move it overland. On the night of September 2, 1954, Chicago closed Lake Shore Drive so the vessel could cross the avenue, and the remainder of the overland journey took about another week.
Chicago Raised Funds to Prevent the Destruction of the Submarine
The U-505’s presence in the museum only occurred because its fate was changed after World War II. In 1946, after extracting information and technology deemed necessary, the U.S. Navy planned to use it as a target. Retired Admiral Daniel V. Gallery, a native of Chicago, then sought a way to preserve the submarine in his city.
In 1953, Gallery and the museum’s then-president, Lenox Lohr, secured the transfer of the vessel. However, the Navy would not cover the expenses. The museum, the city, and private groups raised approximately US$ 250,000 to repair, transport, and install the U-505, initiating the first of two massive logistical operations that would define its history as an exhibit.
In 1954, U-505 Became a Permanent Exhibit in Chicago
The U-505 was officially dedicated as a war memorial and permanent exhibit on September 25, 1954. In 1989, it also became a National Historic Landmark. The Griffin Museum reports that the vessel remains the only existing IX-C U-boat.
This preservation explains why decades later, heavy engineering investment was again necessary to protect it. The German submarine that escaped destruction after the war could not simply be left to climatic wear when its structure began to require a definitive solution, leading to the conservation and relocation project that started in 1997.
