Geely Tests New Aegis Gold Brick Battery Crushed by Tank and Confirms Arrival of EX5 in Brazil

The Chinese automaker Geely attracted attention by testing the resilience of its new Aegis Gold Brick battery in an extreme way. To demonstrate the safety of the component, the company used a 36-ton ZTZ-59D tank, crushing the cell multiple times. Even under such pressure, the battery did not explode, leak, or suffer from thermal runaway.

The test showed that the battery withstood pressure up to 1.8 times greater than the upcoming Chinese safety regulations, which will only come into effect in July 2026. Thus, Geely is already within the parameters of future legislation, with performance exceeding the requirements.

Currently, Chinese regulations require electric vehicle batteries to undergo 24 safety tests.

Geely decided to go beyond and applied 36 different scenarios in evaluating the Aegis Gold Brick. The company also stated that it plans to make its battery safety patents available to other interested automakers.

How the Aegis Gold Brick Battery Works

The battery that will equip the EX5 electric SUV has four cross sections responsible for energy absorption and a lower plate with a 2.6 mm thick “sandwich” structure. This combination helps to protect the system even in extreme impact situations.

Other safety elements include the separation between the liquid and electrical components, electrical insulation, and heat dissipation systems. All these factors were designed to ensure maximum safety, even in the event of failures or accidents.

Additionally, Geely used high-quality and flexible materials in the battery manufacturing. The outer coating is made of aluminum oxide, known for its heat resistance.

This outer layer serves to prevent ruptures as well as to contain heat dissipation in case the battery suffers a puncture.

A relevant point presented by the automaker is the history of models equipped with this technology. Geely’s Galaxy line, where the EX5 fits in, has already sold nearly 1 million units worldwide, with no reported incidents of spontaneous fires.

EX5 Confirmed for Brazil

The EX5 model, also known as Galaxy E5, was officially confirmed for the Brazilian market in April. This will be the first Geely vehicle sold in Brazil.

The midsize SUV has a length of 4.62 meters, a width of 1.90 meters, a height of 1.67 meters, and a wheelbase of 2.75 meters. In comparison, it is 8 centimeters shorter than the BYD Song Plus.

The EX5 will be equipped with an electric motor delivering 218 horsepower and 32.6 kgfm of torque. Its 60.2 kWh battery promises a range of up to 530 km on the Chinese cycle, which tends to be more optimistic than the measurements taken by Inmetro.

Confirmed features include a panoramic sunroof, a complete driver assistance system (ADAS), and LED headlights. Other technical specifications have yet to be detailed by the automaker.

Partnership with Renault and Local Production

The sale of the EX5 in Brazil will be carried out through a partnership with Renault, which already operates with Geely in other markets, such as South Korea.

The agreement established in Brazil provides for the production of hybrid and electric models of the Chinese brand at the plant in São José dos Pinhais, Paraná. However, initially, the EX5 will be imported from China.

The first units will arrive in Brazil through the Port of Paranaguá, also in Paraná. Distribution to dealerships will be handled by Renault, but the sales points will have separate structures, following a model similar to that adopted by brands in the Stellantis group.
