With The New Contract, Samarco Now Distributes Natural Gas in The Free Market, Which Allows It To Expand Its Customer Base in Brazil.

Samarco and Eneva have signed a strategic contract for the supply of natural gas in the free market for the Ubu Complex in Espírito Santo. Starting on January 1, 2025, the agreement will last for three years and will bring significant benefits for both Samarco and the gas market in Brazil.

Increasing Competitiveness And Sustainability For Samarco

With the new contract, Samarco increases access to more competitive and sustainable energy.

The gas supply will be phased in over the next few years, with 40% of the total volume being consumed by the miner in 2025, 25% in 2026, and 15% in 2027.

The shift to the free gas market represents a milestone in Samarco’s strategy, which previously obtained only 10% of its gas consumption in this model.

Now, with the contract with Eneva, 75% of its gas consumption will be supplied through the free market, providing significant savings compared to the captive market.

The Role Of Eneva In The Natural Gas Market

For Eneva, the partnership with Samarco strengthens its presence in the free natural gas market and expands its customer base in Brazil.

The company positions itself increasingly as an essential gas supplier for the industrial and mining sectors in the country.

Marcelo Lopes, Director of Marketing, Sales, and New Business at Eneva, emphasized the importance of the contract, which not only positions the company as a leader in this specific market but also opens doors for future partnerships with other sectors of the industry.

The partnership enhances Samarco’s competitiveness while contributing to local economic development, reinforcing Eneva’s strategic role in Espírito Santo, where it already has contracts with Vale and operates three thermoelectric generation assets.

These assets, located in the cities of Povoação, Viana, and Linhares, complement Eneva’s natural gas “on grid” operation, which is enabled by the country’s gas transportation networks managed by the carriers NTS, TBG, and TAG.

The Trajectory Of Samarco In The Mining Sector

Samarco, a joint venture between Vale and BHP Brasil, is one of the major mining companies in the country.

With 47 years of history, the company underwent a process of resuming its operations in 2020, implementing new technologies and safety measures to ensure more efficient and secure production.

Samarco has operational units in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, specializing in the production of iron ore pellets, one of the main products used by the steel industry in steelmaking.

Currently, the miner operates at 60% of its installed capacity, with plans to reach 100% by 2028.

In 2025, Samarco expects to produce 15 million tons of pellets and iron ore fines, representing significant growth in its production.

The partnership with Eneva is an essential part of this growth strategy, ensuring the miner a more competitive supply of natural gas that aligns with its sustainability goals.

The use of natural gas in Samarco’s production process is not just a cost-saving measure but also an important step towards sustainability.

The migration to the free gas market will allow the company to benefit from a more efficient energy source with a lower environmental impact, which is crucial for a sector so dependent on energy sources like mining.
