Used Vehicle Market Starts 2026 Strong, With Growth in Transfers and Leadership Maintained by Popular Models, While Fenauto Data Reveals Profile of Negotiated Fleet and Points to Predominance of Older Cars in Monthly Sales.

The Brazilian market for used and pre-owned vehicles started 2026 with 1,340,333 units traded in January, according to data from Fenauto, an organization that brings together associations of dealers in the sector.

The volume represented a 9.3% increase compared to the same month of the previous year, even during a period traditionally marked by a slowdown after December’s peak.

When considering only light vehicles and passenger cars, the total reached 984,658 transfers, a growth of 9.5% compared to January 2025.

In this segment, the most prevalent models in the national fleet continued to concentrate the largest quantities of negotiations, with the Volkswagen Gol maintaining its leadership, followed by Chevrolet Onix and Hyundai HB20.

January Performance Confirms Strength of the Used Market

The performance of the first month of 2026 comes after a historic year for the segment.

In 2025, the used car market ended with 18,508,929 vehicles sold, the highest volume ever recorded by Fenauto since the beginning of the historical series consolidated by the organization.

Compared to 2024, the advancement was 17.3%, according to the official data released by the federation.

In sector reports, Fenauto associates this behavior with the consumer demand for alternatives to the new vehicle market, whose average prices remain high.

The organization also notes that January tends to show a retraction compared to December, due to seasonal factors like holidays and expenses concentrated at the beginning of the year, making year-on-year growth a relevant indicator of sector stability.

Gol Leads Used Sales and Expands Advantage

Among the best-selling used cars in January, the Volkswagen Gol appeared again in first place, with 56,314 units transferred during the period.

The Chevrolet Onix took second place, with 35,084 units, while the Hyundai HB20 came right after, totaling 34,114 transactions.

The Gol’s continued dominance, even after production ceased, is explained in sector analyses by the size of the fleet still in circulation and the high number of transactions involving the model.

Meanwhile, both the Onix and the HB20 continue to see significant volumes in ownership transfers, reflecting the widespread presence of these vehicles in the Brazilian market over the past decade.

Fiat Places Three Models Among the Best-Sellers

Fiat was the brand with the highest number of representatives in the top 10 for January.

The Strada ranked fourth, with 29,746 units traded, maintaining strong performance in the used market as well.

Next in line were the Palio, with 29,506 units, and the Uno, with 28,649, both already discontinued, but still with a relevant share in transfers.

The Toyota Corolla was the only sedan among the ten best-selling, with 22,404 units, ahead of popular hatches like Ford Ka, Ford Fiesta, and Chevrolet Celta.

The data reflect the distribution of the circulating fleet and the negotiation profile observed at the beginning of the year.

In the segment of used light commercial vehicles, Fenauto registered the leadership of the Strada in January.

Shortly after, the Volkswagen Saveiro accounted for 17,766 transfers, while the Toyota Hilux totaled 14,519 units traded during the same period, according to numbers released by the organization.

Ranking of Best-Selling Used Cars in January

Considering only passenger cars, the January ranking included, in this order, Volkswagen Gol, Chevrolet Onix, Hyundai HB20, Fiat Strada, Fiat Palio, Fiat Uno, Toyota Corolla, Ford Ka, Ford Fiesta, and Chevrolet Celta.

The quantities reflect the transfers effectively registered during the month and do not include projections or estimates.

Older Cars Lead the Negotiations

The distribution of sales by age group shows the predominance of vehicles with greater age.

In January, cars with 13 years or older responded for 38% of transactions, totaling 509,920 units, according to the classification used by Fenauto in its periodic assessments.

Next, the so-called young used cars, with 4 to 8 years of manufacture, represented 24.1% of the market, with 322,525 units traded.

The remainder of transactions was split between vehicles up to 3 years old, often classified as pre-owned, and those with 9 to 12 years of use, identified in reports as “mature.”

According to recurring evaluations from the automotive sector, the higher participation of older models is related to price profile and to the widespread availability of these units in the national fleet.

This composition helps to understand why out-of-production vehicles continue to appear among the most traded, in a scenario where acquisition and maintenance costs directly influence the purchasing decision.
