Decision redirects millions from traditional event to strengthen primary care in the DF amid budget constraints and a promise to expand medical teams in the public network.
The governor of the Federal District, Celina Leão (PP), announced this Monday (30), the cancellation of the official celebration of Brasília’s anniversary and the transfer of R$ 25 million allocated for the event to the Health Department.
The announcement was made shortly after the inauguration ceremony at the Legislative Chamber of the Federal District, when the head of the Executive stated that the priority at this moment will be to strengthen primary care in the public network.
Funds for Brasília’s anniversary are redirected
According to Celina Leão, the amount would be used for the city’s celebration but was reallocated due to the budget restrictions faced by the local government.

Public health becomes a priority
The decision was formalized in an extra edition of the Official Gazette of the Federal District (DODF) published on the same day.
The movement interrupts a program that had already been organized by the local administration for the 66th anniversary of Brasília, a theme that had motivated, weeks earlier, the creation of a planning committee within the Tourism Department.
Explaining the reallocation, Celina Leão stated: “We are canceling the anniversary of Brasília. We were going to spend R$ 25 million on the anniversary of Brasília.”
She then added that the amount was redirected after a conversation with the Health Secretary, focusing on hiring professionals for primary care.
The statement reinforces a change in priority at the beginning of the administration.
Instead of maintaining investment in a large commemorative event, the government decided to concentrate the budget in an area pressured by assistance needs and personnel demand.
Still, the governor did not detail in the public announcement how many doctors will need to be hired with the reallocation or the timeline for each unit to be reinforced.
In the same statement, Celina said that the cash restriction weighed directly on the choice.
“When there is a budget available for this, you can do both actions. But, at this moment, when we have a budget scarcity, we will need to prioritize,” she declared.
Inauguration marks first impactful decision
The cancellation of the party was communicated just hours after the ceremony in which Celina Leão officially took command of the Palácio do Buriti.
The ceremony took place on the morning of March 30, 2026, at the Legislative Chamber of the Federal District, and formalized the transfer of the position to the then vice-governor.
According to coverage of the day, she will remain in the position until January 6, 2027.
In practice, the announcement about Brasília’s anniversary served as a political and administrative signal of what should guide the initial months of the administration.
Instead of debuting in office with an agenda focused on civic celebration, the new governor chose to highlight the need to rebuild medical teams and direct resources to essential services.
Furthermore, the speech was presented in a context where public health often ranks among the most sensitive areas of district administration.
Even without disclosing, at that moment, a detailed hiring schedule, Celina linked the reallocation directly to the attempt to expand the response capacity of the basic network.
Competition for doctors is announced
Another point highlighted by the governor was the promise of a public competition for primary care doctors.
When addressing the topic, she stated: “Today we are already announcing an immediate public competition for primary care doctors.”
Subsequently, she declared that the government’s goal is to complete the term with all health teams fully staffed at the DF posts.
The statement positions the hiring of professionals as one of the main showcases of the new administration.
By linking the R$ 25 million to the expansion of the workforce in the network, the government attempts to respond to a recurring demand for structural reinforcement in the care closest to the population, especially in the units responsible for the first contact of patients with the public system.
On the other hand, the technical details of the competition, such as the number of vacancies, covered specialties, expected dates for the announcement, or regional distribution of future professionals, have not yet been presented in the announcement.
Without these public definitions, the concrete reach of the measure will depend on the administrative acts following the publication in the Official Gazette.
Planning for the party was already underway
The cancellation comes after a formal step taken by the government itself to enable the celebrations for the 66th anniversary of Brasília.
In an edition of the DODF on March 4, 2026, the Tourism Department established a planning committee to organize the hiring of a specialized company for the capital’s anniversary celebration.
This data shows that the celebration was in the administrative phase before being interrupted.
The reversal, therefore, not only suspends a symbolic event from the local calendar but also alters an agenda that had already begun to be prepared within the public machinery.
The change of direction was announced less than a month after the formalization of this initial step.
With this, the government transforms an expected expense for the city’s celebration into budget reinforcement for health, an area that has now taken center stage in Celina Leão’s first announcement as governor.
The measure, according to what has been disclosed so far, combines expenditure containment with the promise to quickly restore primary care, without the Executive detailing, until this Monday, the complete design of this execution.
