Project Foresees High Complexity Hospital in Cidade Nova and Medical Centers in Strategic Neighborhoods of the Capital

Hapvida will invest R$ 380 million in the state of Rio de Janeiro, including the construction of a new hospital in the central region of the capital. The unit will be high complexity, with 250 beds and premium service standards, aimed at both adults and the maternal-infant audience.

The announcement is part of the strategy to expand the operator’s own network, which aims to increase its level of vertical integration in the Southeast. The forecast is that the hospital will be ready in the second half of 2026, integrating a broader package of improvements in the company’s health infrastructure in the state.

Where Will the New Hospital Be Located and What Is the Expected Impact?

The new Hapvida hospital will be located in Cidade Nova, in front of the Rio City Hall, in a building that previously housed Petrobras’ Corporate University. With over 40,000 square meters, the space will be adapted to accommodate 250 beds, distributed between adult and maternal-infant admissions, with differentiated hospitality areas.

According to the company, R$ 286 million will be invested exclusively in this unit. The hospital will serve beneficiaries of Hapvida itself and other operators, expanding service coverage in the capital.

In addition, the plan includes another R$ 100 million for the construction of two urgent care medical centers — one in Barra da Tijuca and another in Penha — and new clinics in Botafogo and Nova Iguaçu. In Niterói, Santa Martha Hospital will undergo a complete renovation.

Why Did Hapvida Choose Rio for This Investment?

According to CEO Jorge Pinheiro, the moment is right to expand in the state. “There is a strong demand for a higher quality product in the region that complements our product portfolio,” he stated in an interview with Brazil Journal. He also highlighted that many small and medium operators are weakened, which opens competitive space for larger groups.

The new unit will allow Hapvida to create health plans with a higher average ticket, targeted at the audience seeking differentiated care. The operator already serves about 1 million lives in the state and aims to bring Rio de Janeiro closer to the vertical integration standard it has already achieved in regions such as the North, Northeast, and São Paulo.

What Does Verticalization Mean in Practice?

Verticalization, in the supplementary health sector, is the strategy of operating a proprietary network of hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic centers, reducing dependence on outsourced providers. Currently, Hapvida’s verticalization rate is 75%, reaching 88% in its best markets.

In Rio, the current level is still considered intermediate, but the new investment aims to raise this standard. The greater the verticalization, the greater the cost control, standardization of services, and integration of clinical data, which improves patient experience and the sustainability of the system.

What Is Hapvida’s National Plan?

The investment in Rio is part of a national plan announced in December 2024, which predicts the application of R$ 2 billion by the end of 2026. Ten hospitals will be inaugurated in the main Brazilian capitals. In São Paulo alone, four new hospital units are planned, in addition to clinics, diagnostic centers, and collection points.

This move seeks to consolidate the company’s presence in major urban centers and face the challenges of a regulated sector, with pressured margins and a growing need for efficiency.

HapVida aqui na minha cidade é uma 💩. Não conheço ninguém que elogie. Médicos ruins, poucos médicos, grandes esperas no hospital… horrível!!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬
