Heir Of Ford Admits Mistake In Abandoning Sedans And Hatchbacks To Focus Only On SUVs; Brand Evaluates Return To Passenger Car Market To Regain Space.

The automotive world was surprised by the statement from Bill Ford, great-grandson of founder Henry Ford and current chairman of the automaker, who admitted that the decision to abandon the sedan and hatchback market to prioritize only SUVs and pickups was hasty. The revelation marks an important tone shift within the company itself and reinforces that the strategy adopted in 2018 led to difficult-to-reverse consequences.

Heir Of Ford Recognizes Strategic Misstep

In an interview with Autocar, the heir of Ford was straightforward, stating that the company “is not where it should be” in the passenger car segment.

The cut of iconic models such as Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, and Taurus left gaps in the company’s portfolio in the United States and opened space for competitors that maintained lines of sedans and hatchbacks.

Between 2018 and 2020, Ford sales fell from 2.5 million to 1.9 million units—a substantial drop, even with the pandemic as a backdrop. Only in 2024 did the brand surpass the 2 million vehicle sales mark again, but primarily sustained by the F-Series pickups and Ford SUVs, such as the Bronco Sport.

The Impact Of Exiting The Sedan And Hatchback Market

The move to end passenger car lines was seen as bold at the time, but today it seems to have come at a high cost. In the United States, where smaller models have regained relevance due to price and efficiency concerns, Ford’s absence in this segment has left consumers orphaned of more affordable alternatives.

In Europe, the scenario is not much different. Ford drastically reduced its offering of compact and midsize cars, betting on crossovers and electric SUVs, such as the Puma. However, competitors like Kia and Hyundai reaped rewards for maintaining sedans and hatchbacks in line, capitalizing on the growing demand for more economical vehicles by 2025.

Ford SUVs Sustain Sales But Do Not Avoid Criticism

Although Ford SUVs have been critical in keeping the brand relevant in recent years, the excessive reliance on this type of vehicle has begun to generate criticism.

The company’s CEO, Jim Farley, recently emphasized that “consumers need to fall in love with smaller cars again,” citing not only costs but also environmental concerns.

According to him, the excessive weight of SUVs represents a challenge for sustainable mobility, as larger vehicles consume more energy—whether with combustion engines or electric ones. This view reinforces that the sole bet on SUVs may have been a short-term decision, neglecting to adequately consider medium- and long-term trends.

The Return Of Passenger Cars And The Future Of Ford

The heir of Ford also indicated that a new generation of the family may be involved in redesigning the global strategy.

His son, Nick Ford, recently joined the company and is already participating in formulating new plans. Bill Ford promised “good surprises soon,” suggesting that the company may return to investing in the sedan and hatchback market, possibly in electrified versions, to regain lost ground.

This repositioning could be crucial to recapturing consumers who migrated to other brands in search of smaller and more affordable models. Additionally, it reinforces that total electrification will not be a one-size-fits-all solution. Bill Ford himself noted that “the combustion engine is still going to survive in some regions,” showing that the company intends to adopt a flexible strategy according to the reality of each market.

Lessons From A Historic Mistake

The public admission of the mistake by the heir of Ford is a sign that the automaker is willing to reassess decisions that, while strategic in the short term, proved detrimental in the long run. The recognition also opens the door for reconciliation with consumers who still associate the brand with iconic passenger cars.

For many analysts, Ford’s return to the compact car segment may be inevitable, especially given the pressure for cheaper, sustainable, and accessible vehicles.

The question now is whether the automaker will be able to regain in a timely manner the space it lost to competitors that maintained focus on the sedan and hatchback market.

Infelizmente não dá mais pra confiar numa montadora que em um estalo de dedos simplesmente deixou os clientes a ver navios, quem garante que não fará de novo?

Nunca entendi tirar automóveis consagrados no mercado e deixar clientes fiéis migrarem para outra marca. E o pior ainda tiraram o troler de linha. Isso é que eu chamo de burrice.

Burrice não. Traição. Eu tinha um Focus 2013 completo, tirei zero, minha esposa um fiesta sedan. Troquei por BYD. E não me arrependo.
