Use of “blasting” technology on sloped land or eroding soils, prevents landslides; in addition to contributing to the environment through low CO2 emissions, reducing up to ten times compared to traditional logistics

São Paulo, April 2022 – Hydroseeding is undoubtedly the best option for covering bare soils using fast-growing plant species. This is because the technology used, instead of placing grass plates on slopes or works, “paint” the soil through blasting and mixing equipment. 

What has defined hydroseeding as the “darling” of the agro and road, urban, railway and mining infrastructure companies is precisely because it has a faster and more practical application in works, eliminating the risks of soil erosion, in addition to covering the vegetation works to contain slopes and difficult terrain.

It is estimated that each piece of equipment can plant up to 30.000 m2 of vegetation per day, requiring less than 45 days for lawns, coverings or slopes to be covered by strong vegetation. 

This revegetation model consists of applying a mix of selected seeds of herbaceous species with an emphasis on grasses, legumes, chemical fertilizers, organic fertilizers, wood fiber mulch and adhesive polymers. 

According to Bruno Watanabe, CEO of the VG Group – a greentech accelerator holding, considered one of the largest operational hydroseeding groups in the country -, by dispensing with soil preparation or application of blankets, the process directly contributes to the environment. “With the aim of reducing CO2 emissions with freight and displacement, we carry out intelligent logistics, by planting seeds in fiber mulch instead of grass plates or seedlings. Another sustainable part is that the seedlings do not need drinking water, as they are planted in the rainy season”, he explains. 

Types of Hydroseeding

Hidrossemeadura VG has sought to adapt to the needs of its customers in different regions of the country. Although it offers several application solutions, there are two types that are most sought after by road, urban, rail and mining infrastructure companies

  1. Net Gram – ideal for soils with little susceptibility to erosion and with a maximum slope of 45°. Liquid grass is a hydroseeding process done by blasting a high viscosity solution containing seeds, fertilizers, wood fiber mulch with fixatives and additives. 
  2. Liquid Biomat – ideal for damaged soils, with susceptibility to erosion and slope above 45°. It is an innovative process for controlling erosion and covering vegetation in critical areas. It consists of using the hydroseeding process to apply a high-performance material to the soil made up of wood fiber mulch, hydro-absorbent polymers and high-performance mineral-based fixatives. This material, together with fertilizers and seeds, when applied, form a blanket of intertwined fibers and of high cohesion with the soil. This blanket adheres completely to the soil forming a protective layer and an excellent growth medium for the sown vegetation.

Biodiversity and pollen banks 

Floral vegetation is part of the regeneration and balance of every ecosystem. And the development of transgenics in high-scale agriculture accelerated the growth of monocultures, as in the case of corn and soy production. The subject is controversial because it puts pollinators at risk – and precisely for this reason it has been debated.

One solution found to solve the challenge is the development of “pollen banks”, planting flowering vegetation around highways and solar energy farms, for example, which benefit the “feeding” and preservation of pollinators: generally insects such as bees , flies, butterflies, moths, wasps, beetles and ants, fundamental beings for the future of the next generations.

One of the most relevant differentials of hydroseeding is safety by reducing the rate of accidents at work on the construction site, after all, it eliminates work at heights and reduces the exposure of employees in risk areas such as roadsides or places where earth movement occurs.

It is noteworthy that this decrease in professionals on the spot thanks to hydroseeding, it solves the challenge of idle professionals, because, in ordinary situations, engineers in the field remain on the works, waiting and depending on approvals from the work safety area.
