Strategic Cooperation Between Peru and South Korea Strengthens Defense Industry, Highlighting the Production of KF-21 Fighter Parts in Peruvian Territory, and Able to Operate 5th Generation Fighters.
A historical step was taken last Saturday: during a summit between the presidents of South Korea and Peru, an agreement was signed that brings Peru closer to a 5th generation fighter. The partnership encompasses the production of parts for the modern KF-21 in the South American country, placing Peru in a prominent position in the regional defense industry.
Peru has just made an important leap in the military aviation landscape. During the summit held last weekend, the leaders of Peru and South Korea signed strategic agreements aimed at boosting cooperation in the defense industry and the mining sector. Among the highlights is the production of parts for the KF-21 fighter in Peru, a partnership that could transform the country into the first in Latin America to operate a 5th generation fighter.
Production of KF-21 Fighter Components in Peru
The South Korean manufacturer Sky has signed a memorandum of understanding with SEMAN (Peruvian Air Force Maintenance Service) for the production of components of the KF-21 fighter in Peruvian territory.

Peru Will Invest 3 Billion Dollars in the 2025 Military Budget
The eyes are also focused on a future billion-dollar contract: Peru plans to invest about 3 billion dollars in the 2025 military budget for the acquisition of 24 modern aircraft, replacing its current fleet composed of Soviet-made Mig-29, Su-25, and Mirage 2000 fighters. Although the Peruvian government has already shown interest in South Korea’s light FA-50 fighters, there are strong indications that the country is also considering the possibility of joining the KF-21 fighter program.
The KF-21, with its stealth design under development, promises to be a viable 5th generation alternative at competitive costs. Currently, the model is considered a “4++” due to external weapon carriage, but future versions with internal compartments are in development and may take off in the next 6 to 10 years.
The Peruvian participation in the manufacturing and assembly of the KF-21 strengthens the hypothesis that the country may eventually acquire this aircraft, especially if the 5th generation version truly comes into operation. If this materializes, Peru could be a pioneer in Latin America in operating a 5th generation fighter.
In Addition to the 5th Generation Fighter, Armored Vehicles and Submarines
Besides the aeronautical sector, the agreements signed between the two countries also include the development and co-production of armored vehicles and submarines, further strengthening bilateral ties.
The future of military aviation in Peru is gaining new momentum, and direct involvement in the production of part of the KF-21 is a milestone that projects the country onto the international defense stage. The aviation world remains focused on this important development.
With the agreement signed, Peru not only strengthens its defense industry but also positions itself as a strong candidate to be the pioneer in Latin America in operating a 5th generation fighter. What once seemed a distant dream is increasingly close to becoming a reality.
