After Being Mistakenly Declared Dead by SUS, Argentinian Student Corrected Registration at Clinic and Exposed Failures in the National System
The Argentinian Matías Roitberg, 25, who has been living in Brazil for over 10 years, was shocked to discover that he was officially dead. The error was identified when the medical student from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) tried to obtain his vaccination card at the Health Sciences Center.
According to Roitberg, an employee found the document separated and joked when handing it over. “You’re the one who died, right?,” the young man told the TV news program Bom Dia Rio. “I was completely speechless; my friends were laughing a lot, and I didn’t know what to say“, he concluded.
The moment was surprising, as friends laughed at the situation while he didn’t know how to react.

Registration Indicated Death in 2023
The SUS system indicated that the death had occurred on October 2, 2023. To reverse the mistake, the student had to go to a Family Clinic in the Flamengo neighborhood, in the South Zone of Rio.
At the unit, he was able to prove that he was alive and regularize his situation. Additionally, he discovered that other information had been altered.
Alterations Beyond the Death
The young man stated that the record also showed a discrepancy in his color: “Not only was my death recorded, but they also claimed that I am black, when I am white“.
This information increased the strangeness because the alteration had supposedly been made in Ataléia, in Minas Gerais, a municipality he had never visited.
The case raised questions about how the data had been modified and why the Minas city appeared linked to the registration.
Ministry of Health Responds
In a statement, the Ministry of Health explained that CadSUS receives records made by accredited operators at health units.
The agency assured that there was no fraud or data leak, but rather the incorrect use of valid credentials.
The ministry also emphasized that when misuse is identified, the operator’s login is blocked, and the data is corrected in an automated unit.
Furthermore, all actions are recorded, allowing for tracing of the responsible party.
The episode brought relief after the regularization, but also raised concerns as it exposed flaws in a system essential for millions of Brazilians.
The information comes from an article by Portal Terra.
